Interview with Roland Sands
of Roland Sands Design & Performance Machine

By: DougZ

DZ: Outside of your bikes, do you have a favorite custom bike that is out on the scene right now? Favorite builder/shop, outside yourself of course.

RS: A guy named Stillen from Sweden is building insane stuff. He just built an amazing boardtracker.

DZ: What was your very first bike project?

RS: Sportster flattracker

RSD Grunt:

DZ: The Kenny Roberts project bike....wow. Tell me about that bike and what thoughts you have on it, building it and riding it.

RS: 200 HP, 300 lbs, rigid... it's F'ing gnarly. I got my knee down on it and the tires are shredded from doing burnouts on it at Laguna Seca.

The KR V5:

DZ: Speaking of GP...you have a favorite rider right now? Hayden, Rossi, someone else? Do you still watch racing, and if so, how often? SBK, AMA, MotoGP?

RS: Rossi is the shit, any bike and any time, but Stoner is coming on strong.

DZ: Back to the bikes: Fuel injected or carbed bikes, which do you like better?

RS: FI for the future, but carbs are always easier to work on.

DZ: Street fighter scene: Its pretty big over in Europe and just getting its foothold here in the US. Tell me your thoughts on the scene, its potential, as you see it, in the US, and any other thoughts you have on it.

RS: I think it's the future in a lot of ways. What's better than picking up a crashed sportbike and making it your own. You've got high performance and creativity smashed together. It's all good.

Roland has also done some handy work with sport bikes.....check out this Busa project....that he ended up redoing, because in his words" it had too much flake and too much bling, for it's own good."
