Alone I Play - Review of the Jonathan Davis Solo Tour
by: Lost MC Goon

I will preface this review with the admission I have been a fan of the band Korn for quite a few years. I own each album they have released,  so when I heard that Jonathan Davis was doing a solo tour I was somewhat skeptical. In the last couple years Head has left the band, David is on hiatus Munky and Fieldy are working of solo endeavors, and now Jonathan is embarking on a solo tour. Is this the end of Korn? I seriously doubt it, it is just a chance to expand the horizons of the individual members.

Then I heard a little more about the show, it would be acoustic, playing some of the rarely played Korn “B” sides and some of the Queen of the Damned soundtrack that Jonathan wrote. OK, I was very interested. Unfortunately I was low on funding when the tickets went on sale, but in a surprise move my old lady bought a pair of tickets. Cool, things are in order and I am headed to the show.

And then came time for Jonathan Davis. A red Throne chair sat center stage with a mike stand on one side and a drum on the other.  Jonathan came out and took his place in the chair, The next hour and a half was an interesting mix of rarely played Korn songs, the Queen of the Damned soundtrack, and covers. To say the show was acoustic would be like calling a Hayabusa a moped. The bass player (Miles Mosley) was playing an upright bass with at least seven effects peddles. Shenkar (he was also the second opening act) was playing a double violin. The rest of the band consisted of Shane Gibson (guitar), Michael Jochum (percussion), and Zac Baird (keyboards). All of the band members have previously toured with Korn as the backing members. They all had a tight set and although the tour had only played about ten shows it was very well prepared.

The set list was varied and included:

Korn Songs:
"Last Legal Drug (Le Petit Mort)",  "4 U" "Hey Daddy",  "Dirty" "Alone I Break",  "Hushabye",  "Kick the P.A.",  "Hold On",  "Got the Life".  "Trash",  "Tearjerker"

Queen of the Damned songs:
"System", "Forsaken", "Slept So Long", "Not Meant for Me", “Redeemer" and the never released "Careless (Akasha's Lament)"

Other Covers:
“love on the Rocks” – Neil Diamond, “Blue Monday” –New Order, and the final song of the night “The Chauffer” –Duran Duran

Jonathan Davis spent all except about 1 minute seated for the performance, However I have never seen someone  rock as hard as he did from a chair.

It was a great night for someone who is a fan of the Band Korn, or Jonathan Davis. The energy of the show was infectious, and it truly looked like Jonathan was enjoying the songs and show. For the casual fan this would not the show for them the lack of radio played singles would leave them wanting more. But, I highly recommend this tour for anyone familiar with the music.
