Adult Swim presents...
Dethklok and You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead.
by: heineken

My roommate went crazy when he heard the news. Adult Swim was putting Dethklok out on tour. Picture it, a 320 lb. man dancing around the apartment, beard, long hair and facial piercing's bouncing up and down, rattling the dishes in the kitchen and the fillings in my teeth. I swear the sorority girls below us thought the ceiling was coming down.

Turns out, Adult Swim set up shows at 12 universities across the nation. Ours wasn't one of them. Fortunately for us and unfortunately for him, my little brother goes to the University of Kansas. A quick call scored us 6 tickets.

So last Saturday, we loaded up the cars and went to Lawrence, KS, for the show. I went a bit early so I could pick up my little brother and his girlfriend and more importantly, the tickets. As usual, my friends were very late getting there, so we barely got in the door with our vouchers.

Now it's ten minutes from the show and we're stuck most of the way back in a crowd of a thousand people with a unique situation. My brother's girlfriend is handicapped, so we figured we'd be able to find a spot off to the side/in the back where she'd still be able to see. Nope. They packed this room completely full of people. After a little talking with the KU student union workers, they talked to their boss and got us something I never expected. They put us on a balcony overlooking the ballroom with no crowd, no mosh pit and the ability to be 15 feet from the stage (and right next to the production office and dressing rooms, coincidentally).

The six of us got what seemed like VIP treatment the rest of the night. I can't thank their student affairs office more.

Now for the show. Contrary to what all fliers and announcements for the show indicated, the line-up began with And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead and ended with Dethklok, which is the way it should have been.

And You Will Know Us put on a disappointing show. Scratch that, terrible show. It wasn't even because of their music. I'm not a fan of their style of music but I can definitely sit through it. It's not quite emo, not metal, not very good -- it's just there.

What made the show a disappointment was one of their band members. I don't know the band well enough to say who it was, but if I were in a band with him, he wouldn't be in the band long.

Halfway through their set, he gets visibly angry (I think he broke a string, oh noes!) and swings his guitar at a mic stand, sending it flying into the first row. He throws his guitar down on stage and storms off to the side. The rest of the band finishes the song and they do a little game of musical chairs, everybody changing seats/instruments, like they did several time in the show.

Meanwhile, a dude in the front row is getting escorted to the back by EMT's with a split forehead. I wouldn't be as pissed that I got my head split with a microphone stand as much as I would be that I lost my spot in front.

The performer was a tool, but it's a metal show -- shit happens, right?
