Dethklok and You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead. (Continued)

A couple of songs later, he's on the drums and is feeling saucy again. Towards the end of a song he reaches down, grabs the bottom of as many drums as he can and throws them into the air, scattering the set all across the stage. And then storms off to pout in the corner. The rest of the band calls it quits, waves to the crowd and exits the stage. And there was much rejoicing. |

So that's how "And You Will Know Us" left a bad taste in my mouth. In fact, I wanted to punch that guy in the baby-maker.
But then the real music started. There were a lot of questions as to how the second show would come off. Since Dethklok is an animated band with studio musicians performing the songs, would they come out in costume?
Perform as themselves? All I can say is that the show was much better than I ever imagined it would be. There were three huge screens, one directly behind the band and smaller ones on either side of the crowd with images and videos projected on them. |
The entire show was done in animation, with the band playing all of the music that would accompany what, in essence, were music videos. It worked very well. Except for the flashes of stage lights, the performers were on a blacked-out stage, with the animated versions of themselves taking all the glory.
Any fan of metal has to be a fan of Dethklok. It's gory, gruesome and chock-full of searing guitar riffs and thundering, rock-you-to-the-core double bass beauty. What's not to love? |
Their show went off without a hitch. Like most good bands, they sounded better live than on their album (The Dethalbum, 2007), which, by the way, premiered at #21 in Billboard 200's rankings. In fact, their album is the highest-charting death metal album ever produced.
If you were wanting to catch Dethklok live, you're a little too late. They wrapped up their tour on Sunday with a show at Northwestern in Chicago.
That doesn't mean you're completely missing out though, the second season of Metalocalypse airs every Sunday night at 11:45pm (and 3:15am for you late-night folk) and re-runs of the first season are most weekdays at 12:15.
