A lot of 2-stroke silencers are made using carbon fiber tubes.

The bike is now at Jeff's shop for pipes.

Left at 7am. Broke down the SXZ Supermoto bike. Built up the Streetfighter RZ. Packed the Supermoto in the car. The drive home took 9 hours. Raining all day and night. Got home at 1am.

Brutal, but I'm home now, having a beer.

Not for certain, but these next pipes will probably be titanium with laser cut cones.

Having carbon inside the inner pipe might be too much for the resin to handle.

I should make a correction.

I want titanium pipes, and Jeff wants to make titanium pipes. But, as of right now, the answer is NO.

The only reason to use titanium, is so that the pipes can be color annealed. The problem is, I haven't found anyone in the USA who does it. If I find someone to do it, then the pipes will be titanium, if not, the pipes will be polished stainless.

An option would be to go with polished titanium, and let them naturally change color over time, with use. Problem is, I doubt I'll be around long enough to see it.

I had an idea to use an industrial oven. If we could test some welded pieces, we might be able to calculate the temperature and time to cook the pipes to achieve a nice, even color (of blue). Risky business, though. If it doesn't come out right, the pipes would need a complete polish to remove all the bad color. Also, I would prefer a color gradiant effect - a solid color isn't really what I want.

There's a little time before Jeff starts on the pipes, so I have to make decisions and design changes pronto.

Yeah, I think the carbon fiber lined tips idea is off the table.

New idea is to use the same computer program for making cone pieces.

Should be able to make a titanium or stainless perforated cone piece to fit accurately inside the tip. Will only work if the tip is straight, but it's an interesting option. If the cone pieces are laser cut, the perforated cone could have a custom hole pattern.

I'm thinking it would be cool to design pipes very similar to the Supermoto pipes we just finished.

Would like the straight headers (even though they can't be as long), and similar pipe shape. Could also use the same CNC spring hooks on the headers and hopefully, on the silencers/tips.

Not so easy to make unique pipes, but I'm trying.

Smoker style pipes!

Gratuitous pic of the titanium pipe on my WR for reference. Around 25,000 miles on it.

I have no experience with titanium, but they exhaust gases will only get so hot. Would one hard ride not be enough to do whatever coloring it will do? Also, can you wave a torch over it? I really have no idea.

I take it your WR doesn't really leave pavement? I can't imagine how beat up a pipe on my WR450SM would end up routed like that.

A steering damper dampens steering oscillations. If it starts to leak, it may become a steering dampener. There's no such thing as a dampner.

The coloring on my pipe is noticeably different from month to month. When the pipe was new, it was mostly polished (uncolored) titanium. The more miles I put on the bike, the more coloring appears.

Interesting how one side of the pipe is one color, and the direct opposite side is a different color.

Using a torch is the way to color the pipe. Blending the heat to achieve even and gradient coloring takes practice. I've read that anodizing for color leaves a more dull finish.
