Holy fuck, dude. That's insane. I think that would make me long for the simplicity of a pushrod engine.

Anything pushrod is pretty old at this point though no? I want something safe with airbags and decent suspension. Something that feels good to drive. Q7 was comfortable, nice to drive and was one of the only SUVs rated highly for crash safety.

Its too bad about the timing chain guides because that's an otherwise excellent engine. They're known to need guides around 130k.

Honestly I don't mind overhead cams at all I just wish manufacturers gave belt/chain service a little more priority in design.

Corvettes still use pushrods...

130k miles is not bad at all IMO. In fact, that seems pretty remarkable considering someof the curves going on there. It's just the cost of repairing it when it does need those things freshened up. That's a shame.

And yeah, you're right, very few modern vehicles with all the new safety technology available with pushrod engines. Pretty much looking at domestic for that, which I'm sure doesn't interest you. I would think any OHC inline engine would have to have a simpler valvetrain setup. V formation + DOHC always seems a bit messy.

It's like the old saying goes: Power, reliability, inexpensive - pick two and forget the other.

Yeah I wouldn't mind at all doing the guides if they were on the front of the engine, but dropping the entire driveline to do that... Nope.
Your right "American" vehicle don't really do it for me, there's no attention to detail. We are borrowing the in-laws Trailblazer which I can't stand (though I'm grateful they are letting me use it). It handles awful, the throttle is an on-off switch, the fit and finish is poor etc. My F350 was better but I don't really want a truck.
I've looked at lots of SUVs, still haven't found anything that swayed me from wanting another Q7 but still trying to work out the engine. Guess I'll have to go wade through the vortex and get some info on the VR6.

Got an email back from hpa, they're working on a turbo kit for the 3.6 vr6. Could be a bit expensive, but that would be a bad ass ride. Should sound pretty awesome with a good exhaust. Think I might be saving for that.

a riding mate of mine picked up an A6 v8 for about 3k because of this very issue. the PO drove it into the audi dealer to get them replaced, when they quoted them 10k they handed the keys over and drove off in a newer model it was only about 6 years old he got it for cost and then took best part of a year doing the job on his drive. my mitis also have plastic guides but its a 40min job to replace them.

ride it like you stole it
