Default Swapping steering stems...1mm wall thickness bushings?

Alright the donor triples have a 30mm stem and the stem I'm wanting to use is 28mm. A 1mm wall thickness bushing seems...slight...and I can't seem to find any. How would you guys handle this?

If I was turning a bush I'd rather make it thicker, press it on then skim it once it was fitted to the stem

My first time having to do exactly that came up a year or so ago, had to take up a 1.1mm gap on a Harley "springer" front end being fitted to a Honda CB750K. Only ended up with that one spacer to get it all fitted though, even used the stock size Honda bearings on it.

Try as I might, I couldn't get the bearing race over the bushing I had made for it (attempting to press it on after making the bushing) so I tossed the whole thing back in the lathe and skimmed a little bit off, then tossed the stem and bearing race back in the press and it fit snug as stock.

I took it to my machinist this morning and discussed all the suggestions I've received.

He will weld the area up and then turn it down. He says he can make it match the profile of the GSXR stem without any trouble. Our only concern is that the heat from welding it will affect the bearing race, or possibly make the stem brittle.

Fuck that idea of welding the stem. Too risky in my opinion when a press fit bushing or even one held in with bearing retainer will easily do the job you are after. Have it turned after they are on if the dimensions aren't correct like yantosh and RatFighter suggested. This is the easiest and safest way to do it imho.

Preheat and postheat, use the right kind of filler, should be fine. If you're really worried you can have it properly heat treated afterward, not terribly expensive.
I'd much prefer a solid chunk of metal to a multi-piece setup.

Weld build-up and turn to size is a super common way to repair worn industrial shafts. I wouldn't be concerned at all about doing it to a steering stem where the loads are mostly axial. and well supported by bearings.

The dude knows his metal and has made axles and driveshafts for me, as well as a number of things from hardened steel. I'm sure it'll be fine for the riding I do.
