I enjoyed it the one time I rode it but I don't think I'd want to live with one daily. Felt like a weird seating position to me. Really wide and flat. It's got under 5k miles and he's asking $8500 for it. I know we aren't near each other but if you want I can put you in touch with him either for a first hand review or for the purchase.
I appreciate the lead, but I don't think I'd go for an actual Hyperstrada.

By all accounts, for that generation the SP version of the Hypermotard is legitimately worth the upgrade... not only does it have the better suspension, but they gave it a different triple clamp to fit it and in doing so changed the rake and wheelbase slightly, and supposedly it's a measurable improvement.
The Hyperstrada is just the touring version of the Hypermotard, all the parts are cross compatible, but it didn't get an SP option. So the ideal would be the HYM SP with the windscreen and luggage of the 'Strada.

The Hyperstrada does have a different "touring" seat as compared to the Hypermotard. I've never stuck my butt on on the touring seat, but I'd imagine that's the main culprit for the wide/flat feel you experienced.

pretty sure I've seen it done on a VFR swingarm although they tend to use a motorcycle tire

using a car tire on a big touring bike is generally referred to as dark side

A steering damper dampens steering oscillations. If it starts to leak, it may become a steering dampener. There's no such thing as a dampner.

I just figured dark side guys might be able to suggest a specific tire

I don't think I'd have ever gotten into Duc's in the first place if that Hyper hadn't basically landed in my lap for free, but once I experienced it it was like "oh, that's why." Maybe it's just a placebo effect, but they really do feel better. The Pani feels soooo much more refined than even newer R1's and GSXR's.
And with the Hypermotard line specifically, I've yet to find an offering from another manufacturer that even fits in the same category. The Aprillia Shiver comes the closest, but not quite there. I've ridden FZ09's and stuff and it just doesn't do the job.

I thought the FZ09 sucked too. The FJ09 might make an awesome daily, though. The 09 engine is fun but the FZ just handled too goofy for me.

Brand loyalty or brand hate- I don't get in to. Get what you like. It's your money. If your love your Ducs, get another Duc. But it sounds like the Ducs aren't making you all that happy on a daily basis. There's tons of options out there. Sounds like your want some less high strung, but you don't want to compromise fun or looks- and nothing you see is tripping your trigger? Sounds like you're gonna have to build what you want
