Default VFR 800 coolant in inlet tract

When I was looking at this motor and considering putting it back into my 2019 build off bike I saw some coolant in the inlet tract.

I shall pull the head off, figure that I have got nothing to lose.

Anybody seen anything like this before? suggestions??

Many thanks in advance

If it's sitting on top of the valves, it seems more likely it was spilled in there while moving/removing the tstat, wax unit, or other hoses from the vee?

Pull the spark plug and shine a light in the hole. If it was running with a coolant leak, the piston will be pretty clean vs sooted with carbon.

what seb said. unless it has a cooled head (like the harley v-rod) or a throttle de-icer (thats a auto/truck thing...) theres shouldnt be any coolant flow above the head gasket.

Saw this strange growth inside the inlet

Gave it a clean down and I think / assume that this is where the crack could be

Saw a product on line that adsorbs into the cracks to identify problems.
Don't know if I'll bother.
Don't think it would be financially viable to fix.
Set a new search on ebay for a new head and or engine.

spotarama is a NOOB
Default Re: VFR 800 coolant in inlet tract

its on the inlet side so it'll run cooler than the exhaust, possible to gouge it out a bit and jb weld or epoxy ?

got nothing to lose by trying? unless of course the jbweld lets go and destroys the motor ? in which case you may have something to lose....

the stuff you're thinking of is flaw finder/developer which will stain any cracks blue ( or whatever colour they're using) we sell it at work for crack testing mag wheels
