Not having a boring bar or even a drill bit large enough to do the 1" hole I took a chance on that extruded stock.

Now I know I cant trust it. But that also means I now have a boring bar and a drill set large enough to never have to trust it on the way.

A swear I knew that piece being perfect way around not having tooling was going to be too good to be true...

Concentricity pretty much goes out the window every time you rechuck something. It's best to turn all your inner and outer surfaces without ever moving the work, then part it off and trim to size. At least, that's my self educated way of doing it.

Hell yeah man, you bring up a good point too..

See and I did rechuck that piece and blamed the thin edge on myself because of it. It was only until I mic'd the untouched end of the leftovers that I saw it came to me that way... IIRC it was something like 30 thou difference.

I'm definitely getting more comfortable on the lathe though. Finish and nailing the wanted dimensions is vastly improved from the first few thing I played around with...

in an ideal world, yeah, do everything in the one set up,often neither practical or possible tho

one of these mounted in place of a tool,
I think for simple things like axle spacers it's pretty easy to knock it out in one set up, but yeah, sometimes it's just not feasible.

Talking about the tool you posted, how would you adjust the centerline of the work without having an independent 4 jaw? I'm pretty much at the mercy of wherever my 3 jaw decides to stop at. Unless I turn between centers, but that gets fiddly quick. Especially on small things.

As a side note, my 3 jaw was pretty bad for being off center when I first got it. I clamped a ring on the outside of the chuck jaws ( to take up the lash) and ran a boring bar through the center I the chuck. Helped it a bunch.
