I have to ask, why your not just making a shit ton of gas tank covers to sell on ebay? The guys who keep there bikes in the plastic wrappers get stiff over carbon fiber.

well now im kinda at square one here, I spent like 40 bucks just on the carbon fiber (which was a good deal for a 6x6 sheet) so I dont want to get more material right off. if i can make what i have work that would be ideal, but its just impossible to lay it flat.

i have thought about that. i have done a couple tanks for people however, i hadnt thought about putting it on ebay. that is a good idea. i would just need to be able to get my clear-coat smooth. My filter must be bad cause i have been getting some fish-eyes in my clear. but that is a good plan!

Do you think i would be better off buying a nice tank and making a mold to sell covers or do custom wrapping? cause that would require physical possession of the tank to be covered.

i think you are going to be less frustrated by this project if you just lay the kevlar aside and get some twill. that stuff will be great for making small simple parts but really will be more trouble than it is worth for this project.

I usually bought 3k twill which is 5.8oz weight and provides excellent flexibility and contour adhesion.
here are a couple places that give you multiple types and widths. almost everyone sells it by the yard.

I think next one you do, you should try a mould version.
If you can release it and transfer it between tanks easily enough, you'll have your answer.

the problem is that most tanks are wider on the top than the are where they meet the frame... so there is not way to have a one-piece cover to fit that.

however, some sport bikes like the Honda cbr 600rr has a stock tank cover that i could make...
you think those squids would pay $200 for a full carbon fiber cover?

Sure. So I'm just thinking if the skin had enough give to flex past that, you can maybe use that to your advantage to keep it on once it was there. Would depend on the tank, as you say.

I think if you're replicating an OEM part, you might leave yourself more open to licensing issues than with tank covering but it's only a thought. Dunno.

Would a squid pay 200$ to be able to brag to there friends about having a carbon fiber this or that?
SURE, hell they already brag when they have carbon look levers.

If the tank is smaller on bottom than the top, then what about buying a nice tank, covering it charging 200 and there tank as the price. Make them do an exchange maybe.

And since your good with it, I would be making molds of every bike part I could to sell on ebay.

that is a good point. as for carbon fiber parts on ebay. i have molds for everything i have made but none of it will fit on anything else so far.

however, the idea of buying a cheap tank and covering it is brilliant!
