As I hadn't got the info for the modifications required for the damper rods, I had a look at the condition of the brakes, and realised that the calipers needed more than just a quick clean, as the seal were popping out around both pistons of the right hand caliper. With the first piston out it looked a bit smeggy, and once cleaned up it didn't really look that much better... Damn, might have to invest in new pistons as well as a seal kit.

And as I'd got a new battery, I checked the difference in size - now I need to decide whether to make a new battery tray, or modify the old one so it can hold the battery and something else, maybe reg/rec or starter solenoid?...

Don't think I've heard "smeggy" before. Is that a reference to having smegma on it?

A steering damper dampens steering oscillations. If it starts to leak, it may become a steering dampener. There's no such thing as a dampner.

smeggy
Used to describe something that smells bad or something that appears to be rotting and disgusting.

If you decide to reuse those pistons, give them a nice little polish with 600 and 1000 grit paper and then a buff, be a shame if the ridges on those pits ruin your new seals

Battery box... seems a fine spot for the starter relay. Definitely would not house the r/r there - keep that hot thing away from the battery please. Best if you can get some airflow on it.
