I would think the fluctuation would have to be lack of steady voltage, so maybe the regulator portion is acting up? Especially since your voltage is so high. 17v at idles seems pretty strong. That's usually enough to start blowing incandescant bulbs. Odd that the voltage drops with revs, though. Although, before I had a rectifier on my XR and I was running straight AC voltage, my headlight light pulsed hard at idle. I think it was due to the voltage not being smoothed out in to the direct current, so I was seeing the alternating fluctuations visually. So that could point to rectifier issues. If the rectifier isn't rectifying you should be able to measure your voltage and see if you are getting AC or DC. Depending on what you have, some meters will distinguish between AC and DC for you when you put the leads on a circuit.

From what I've read about mosfets, the voltage decreasing above Idle is normal but 17 seems excessive.
Definitely getting DC voltage. If I put my meter on AC, I get ~40V flashing at me but only with the red lead on live, inverted I get nothing. Which possibly means the diodes in the rectifier are working. Maybe. I think it might be my meter reading the DC voltage reading and multiplying it.... I wonder if it's not happy with my battery eliminator. Or my terminals need more insulation.

Man, charging systems are weird. Bottled lightning. I wish I understood them better. Good luck, bud.

does the led light set have ballast resistors?

They're 12v lamps with built in resistors and not had any problems with them until this mosfet was installed. The dash illumination pulses slightly too. I was wondering if I'm getting arcing between one of the AC phases and the DC output. Hence fluctuating DC and pulsing lights.
Might just have to wait for the connector to arrive.
For now I've added a new earth right by the RR:

i didnt see the part about 17v, thats way too high. most I see on high capacity charging systems on cars is 14.8v maybe 15v.

No battery. Just a capacitor.
The answer is probably that this mosfet is either faulty or unsuitable for my setup but I'd like to try to get this sorted to save my stator.

Is it possible the voltage regulator is sensing voltage somewhere that would make it think it needs to ramp up the voltage? For example, it's sensing voltage after the headlight and trying to (over)compensate.
