I'm slow learning about my 100 year old Dalton 6 lathe and how to use a lathe in general. I mounted a quick change tool post and I noticed the bit is above center. Am I correct in thinking it should be on center? The tool holder is as low as it'll go and is resting on the compound. Am I missing something?

Any help would be appreciated!

Yeah, you basically want to shoot for centered. I don't like being the one to say this, but looks like the toolholder is just too big for the machine. I googled that toolholder and it says 5-8" swing? But that's a general rough estimate, I reckon. Seems like maybe the apron/cross slide setup on your machine must be on the tall side.

Any chance of contacting the seller and telling them what's up? If it still looks new you may be able to exchange it for a smaller size.

I mean, you could always start milling the bottoms off the tool blocks, but that's a pain you can hopefully avoid.

Sorry man. This sucks

+2... center or just a tiny bit below..

i run this kind on mine... that tool holder looks to be really tall? maybe send them an email and ask for some heights... this oculd be low enough to get away with it.. https://www.shars.com/products/toolh...ype-101-xl-axa

Aye, gotta be centered. That'll make a shit cut. If it were me I'd pop the holder in a mill and shave a bit off the bottom... or hit it with a grinder if you haven't got mill access.

Those holders are great though, use em at work.

Also. Congrats on the lathe!

Thanks for the replies guys!

I'm embarrassed to say that I have had the lathe for several years and the quick change for 2. I've just never had the time to immerse myself into it, but COVID is providing some much needed free time.

The lathe has an 8.5" swing, so I figured this setup would work. Mongoose, the holder you linked actually has a ticker bottom section than the 250-101 holders I have. I put them in this morning and they are too high by the same amount as the one pictured above. Maybe I'll just have the 6 holders I have flycut 2 mm or so.

Cross slide looks kinda beat, does it have high spots making the toolholder sit proud?
