yeah, Racetech doesn't list a spring rate for the rear. strange.

I assume you've looked at shock charts - there are several around that have shock length, spring rate, etc for 11ty different bikes to help pick one

A steering damper dampens steering oscillations. If it starts to leak, it may become a steering dampener. There's no such thing as a dampner.

I have...quite a lot. The common swap onto the GTR is a 2nd gen Bandit 1200 shock and no one seems to know for certain what that spring is. But, reading around, the K5 GSXR shock is a common swap on the B12 and it seems to work...so it should work here (I would think). I'm thinking it's either:

1. The ZX6R swingarm changed the geometry to a degree that it's just now overpowering the spring...doesn't make sense because the stock shock still seems to handle it, but I have to concede it's a possibility.

2. My imagination.

it wouldn't surprise me at all if the new linkage geometry changed effective spring rate

That really was my first assumption, and most likely the source. I did, however, lie...I went back out and screwed around with the preload. Once I got sag set it feels much better.

if you haven't settled for sure...

1) measure shock length, travel length, ride height at travel length
2) remove rear wheel, shock, with bike held up
3) put swingarm in full droop location, then move it up 5" (approximately the right travel)
4) during prior step, measure new "shock" length at a few steps

this'll tell you if geometry is way off

I didn't have my big caliper on hand so you guys are going to have to deal with estimated inches. There's also some important stuff I didn't get pictures of...bummer...

'05 vs '12 swingarm....the newer one is about 3/4" too wide. The '05 swingarm had some slack in the frame, though, and there's some material between the bearing and the outside width of the '12 arm.

I had to remove the dust seals on both sides and used a fly cutter to cut all the material down to the bearing races. I punched a hole in the right side to check out thick the metal was because I was worried about it being a bit thin...and it was thinner than I like. I ended up having to slope that side up a bit and stop cutting...most of the material came off the left side. Someone could do this with a belt sander or grinder but it would take a while.

The GSXR1000 shock BARELY clears...the stock shock has lots of room, though.

The exhaust will clear this swingarm

Mounted up

Or I say the exhaust clears, but I'm going to have to come up with something interesting for the right side dog bone. The ZX swingarm dog bone mounts puts it right in the way...I'm going to have make one that goes around it. I think that will be the hardest part of this project....getting that dog bone the same length eye to eye as the flat one.

Well, unfortunately, the header pipe clears this new swingarm, but the rest of the exhaust doesn't. Going to have to make a custom exhaust.

Alright...took a little break from the back to fiddle with the front. I just picked up a bunch of R6 stuff so I'm abandoning the ZX6R front end and wheels and going with R6 bits.

So I popped the ZX6R forks out and tried a set of '07 R6R forks and calipers with an '05 wheel and axle. They are the same dimensions as the ZX6R forks so they slid right into the triples...and everything just went together. No spacers or shims or anything...it all just worked.

Got to get a longer axle for the back end...but the 5 spokers on both sides looks pretty fair.
