Talking Z-king

Decided to combine all the build info in here. I might jump around a bit... but you'll get the basic idea.

Phase 1

Started out with a bone stock 2003 Kawasaki z1000. I set about ditching the dirty bars and building a custom exhaust. Then, I added a K & N filter, integrated taillight, and some blacked-out panels.

Rocked it like that for a while, but soon grew tired of the red and black. Had it painted Alpine white with several layers of blue and red metal flake. Added pazzo levers, billet case sliders, stainless brake lines, spike bolts, and a few other goodies.

Phase 2

But you see... I had this addiction to riding wheelies.

This is me pulling the bike apart after trashing the stock engine.

Phase 3

About $1700 later.... and I had a complete 2005 zx10r engine kit to go in. Took the bike to a friend's machine shop where we started making the new mounts.

Mock-up:

Actual progress:

Everything lined up and ready for new front mounts:

Front mounts done:

Phase 4

Fast forward a bit and the bike is about 70% complete. Radiator is zip-tied in place, hoses mocked up, handlebar switches ordered, cut down exhaust header in place, etc...

Phase 5

First official start-up of new engine (skipping a little):

Sold the stock engine, pazzo levers, etc... to pay for some much needed parts. Finally ready to take it up the street:

Phase 6

All went well for the first ride. Started thinking about different exhaust and airbox ideas. The only thing that would fit under the tank was a set of shitty UNI foam pod filters. So untill they arrived... I made a set of screens to run just in case I went out for a spin. I also bought a set of nice stock levers to cut down / drill and make cool. Then, I bought a cut-down Muzzy sidewinder exhaust from a drag racer friend and set about making it cool too. I extended it back about 6 inches, and made a core with packing to go in it. After looking at it for a while, I decided it needed a spade-cut tip and some black accents. I also found a set of CNC machine knobs that I turned into frame sliders.

Good documentation on the build man! I had no idea you were rocking a ZX10R mill in that thing.

Very Nice!! A buddy here has a Z1000 and it gets a lot of vibration at higher RPM. Some dampener is missing on the Z1000 that the other Kawi bikes have. Did the ZX10 engine solve that?

Talking Re: Z-king

Got back from bike week 2008 and bought a set of 636 forks, brake calipers, and upper triple. Then, I said... "you know, I really don't like the red wheels". So I got on Ebay and waited for a nice set of zx10r wheels / brakes to pop up at a good price. Two weeks later... the wheels came. I had already installed the forks, so I took it all back apart and swapped in the sexy / lighter wheels.

After that, I pretty much just rode the thing for the season. I did add a few small things.... crg mirror, zx10r gauge, etc... However, the modd bug was about to hit me again.

Phase whatever:

The day before some friends and I went up to the Dragon... my front fender came back from paint. On the trip back home... I realized that I could sure use some higher / nicer rearsets. So I started searching the world wide web for a good deal. Found a set of Speed King rearsets on another forum for 150 bucks, but they fit a zx10r. Who cares right? Quick call and paypal later... they were on the way.

While I waited on the rearsets to arrive, I changed my oil and did some regular service. However, while I had the tank off... I noticed that the UNI pod filters were FALLING APART! WTF? So I decided to go custom with that as well. I bought 8 of the same radiator hoses from 5 different auto parts stores. Bought some thin wall aluminum tubing, and two K & N pod filters off of Ebay. A quick cut here... a hose clamp there... and VOLIA!!!

Rearsets came in... so I started making then fit. Drilled and tapped a hole in the frame and bolted them up. The shift linkage fit perfectly, as did the brake master cylinder and hose.

Again, I rode the bike like that for a while... but something was just missing. Ah... I know what it is! Got back on the computer and started searching for a different swinger. I found a bad-ass Aprilia swingarm, but right before I could buy it... a member on here posted up a complete sssa from a 1996 VFR750. After seeing YVD's bike in person... IT HAD TO BE MINE!!! Bought it, and got it in the mail. Started the process of making it fit.

First thing was first... I didn't like the color, lol. Changed that, and started mounting it on the bike. I had to order some new bearings, but no biggie. Made the new spacers and got everything lined up.

On to build shock mounts:

Don't be fooled by the pics... it took a long time, and the new mounts are plenty thick enough, lol. After I re-mounted the kickstand, I swapped in a nice used zx10r shock, and started looking for a wheel. Scrappy told me to come get one that he had.... so I drove up to ATL and bought it. Brought it home and mocked it up - sorry donut spare... your time is up.

Did a little paint work and installed a nice used race tire. Then, I bought the right combo of wheels spacers to get the tire lined up. Not much room to spare... but it fit!
