Some days, I wish they would have put up an "Area Closed" sign. Other days, I have to not post pictures... Gorgeous hiking areas with some (a lot) of bushwhacking due to trails disappearing.

A little detail that you can't see in that Sopwith plane picture is that the cylinders rotate with the prop. They started that beast up and the whole plane danced about with the torque.

Some people these days are worried with a little fuel spitting out, but some of these old girls did that intentionally to let you know the fuel had pressure.

Yep, and the throttle has two settings, full and ignition cutout, which is when one of those is priming for a landing you hear it spit and stutter between bouts of WOT. It also veers to the right (or was it left) while airborne for the same reason and the pilot has to constantly correct for it.

Casper, there used to be a car that had a rotating cylinder engine in it like you are describing. I can't remember what it was called, but I have to think the flywheel effect would be massive!

No idea how they plumb the fuel to rotating cylinders?

I think radial engine are fascinating. Watching this video reminds me how little I understand of them.

The gentleman in the cockpit and who rebuilt this plane, said each component is balanced in the cylinder against their 8 couterparts. (9 cylinders on a single plane [tee hee, double joke]) It should reduce overall weight due to the cylinders / prop acting as the flywheel instead of needing extra rotating mass.

This one has a hollow crankshaft that they push the fuel into the crankcase through and out the copper tubes up to the heads where the valves do their stuff.

If my WW1 flight sim from the early 90s was accurate, they pulled to the right I hated the Sopwith Camel for that reason.

I dig that they invented the propeller/machine gun synchro mid-war and refitted a bunch of planes. The BALLS on these early dogfighters. Surprised they could keep the plane in the air with the size of them.

I think ww1 and ww2 was the coolest era for war planes...

This flight sim of yours wouldn`t happen to be one of the Red Baron series would it? Played the hell out of the second one in my time, even bought my first joystick because of it.

Yep. Don't recall which one but you could unlock his triplane. I couldn't fly it. I recall being pretty good at bombing and mid-air collisions (if they were even possible... Silly memory). I think I flew primarily German planes in that game
