Okay, so this idea may not work out But i'm fishing for ideas for a headlight setup and I thought that people could use this as a bit of a spam thread to upload any photos of aftermarket headlights or setups they like, and maybe a brand name or link where to find them - the idea being people can refer back to this thread when doing or planning builds.
My only real question was weather anyone has used a single center mounted bi xenon projector lamp without a reflector or shroud as a headlight (I'm UK based so dipped and main beam are a necessity) and how that worked out?
Look for headlight parts from damaged cars. Mercedes, BMW, Audi/VW all use them in upper level models. Strip the projector/lens assembly out and fab up a bucket or pod to fit it in and some mounts to attach it with. Cant think of any builds off the top of my head, but its been done on here. I think Sebspeed might have done it...
I'm a little surprised that this thread hasn't attracted more posts, and a bit disappointed too... I'd like to see what folk have done to modify car lights, especially modern, high performance stuff, to suit a bike application. Or even just how projector lights have been used, and how efficient they have proven...
Looking at the teeny tiny lights on new bikes (new Ducati V4, new R1, new Blade) I'm guessing they'd be pretty decent quality, I'd like to see how we can convert that to the aftermarket...
I once looked into modifying car projectors and stumbled upon three problems. The first one was I need e-approved lights, and car lights are approved as a package so the e-marking is in the outer glass not on the projector itself. The second issue was projectors housed inside a bigger light fixture, once removed, are not even remotely weatherprood by themselves so you'd have to fabricate some sort of a housing to fit them into (yan?) The third one is a (xenon) projector that has both dipped and main beam usually has either a mechanism that moves the bulb forward, or a flippable "shroud" to cover part of the beam when low beams are selected. This makes the whole projector body about as long as a single use anti-tank bazooka so they're not exactly easy to fit onto the front of a motorbike.
Some interesting points made there, thanks folks.
From my perspective, the E-marking isn't an issue, but I know where you're coming from with that Mattson, and as i was thinking of twin lights then it could be arranged so as one light is dip, and one is main rather than the mechanical dip/main shroud feature that those car lights have.
So, as car light conversion could be out of the window. what is available in the aftermarket? LED? HID spotlights? LED conversion into trad mini spotlights to retain a beam pattern?
My ideal solution for what I have in mind would be a round light no more than two inches in diameter...
This is an older thread, you may not receive a response, and could be reviving an old thread. Please consider creating a new thread.
