You want DOM (drawn over mandrel) chromoly tubing. Try looking up metal fab shops in your area, if you hook up w the right one they'll either hook you up with a contact or from their stock.

You can also look if there's a Metal Supermarkets, Mcmaster, or Grainger near you. MCM and Grainger will be the most expensive. MS is usually really good esp, for small pieces.

Motorcycle frames are generally reasonably thin, I'd be surprised to see anything over .120".

I agree that you should go for DOM even though it'll cost a bit more than ERW. Significantly better properties. No downsides other than cost.

4130 is a step above but more picky as far as welding goes.

A steering damper dampens steering oscillations. If it starts to leak, it may become a steering dampener. There's no such thing as a dampner.

Ive used OnlineMetals, Speedymetals, and Metalsdepot to order metal or at least do a cost comparison. From what Ive found most older Japanese frames are around 2mm wall thickness or 0.083. Ive used heavier wall on structural pieces and the 0.083 on bracing etc.

Definitely go with 1.25"DOM if you can especially for a hard-tailed bike.

You learn a lot about people... when they don't get what they want.
