Plugs...
My standard plug is a BR9ECM

But I have a set of R5184-10's in my VJ23 now, and they seem to make a positive difference

Not sure what version would work for your bike?

Stock for this engine was BR9ES but this cylinder wants a BR8ES.
Unfortunately I can't use the plug you posted because it will interfere with the Zeeltronic. I tried non resistor plugs before the zeel but my dash wouldn't work right. It just went crazy.

You could probably use the non-resistor plugs with resistor-type plug caps/wire.

Not sure if it would be better than resistor plugs and non-resistor wire.

Similar issues on the RZ350.

You can try it. I did already and had issues. I tried a Champion non resistor cap a while back and recently I crimped up a custom non-resistor terminal with a champion boot over it but I had running issues. I'm sure it was arcing on the head/thermostat housing. The last time I tried it, the mileage on my speedo jumped up over 16,000 miles with no way to reset it :'( I put this down to the speedo picking up a pulse from the HT lead and interpreting it as wheel rotations.

The Yamaha book for this engine specs a resistor plug and a resistor cap.
Borut says you can use a resistor or non-resistor cap but you must use resistor plugs.

I'm using resistor plug and cap and I'm still getting a blue spark so I'll have to leave it at that.
I was hoping to use non-resistor everything and widen the plug gap but it's not gonna happen on this bike.

Each clip position is 0.9mm apart. So I put the numbers into kyajet.de and calculated the jetting as if the needle is 2 clip positions lower (so 1.8mm - close enough to my 2mm) and it looks as though the main jet will be about 1.5% leaner at full throttle:

Obviously this is just theoretical. Definitely worth a plug chop

What about shaving 2mm off the end of the jet needle?

Won't be necessary to change anything else. The carb can only flow 33mm of air at full throttle. If the needle is able to move 2mm but the air flow remains unchanged, it will screw up the jetting.

Because whether I have the throttle pulled 33mm, 34mm or 35mm, the carb can only flow 33mm worth of air but the needle is allowing more fuel through the further it travels. This is creating a varying mixture and could cause a lean condition at just off full throttle.

So the way it is now is perfect. At wide open, the slide and needle are static. Better for jetting and less throttle travel at the bars

Been using either resistor plugs or resister wire, but not both. For years, without issues.
Different bike, different parts.

This is what MK said about the slide mod:

"The RGV carbs have the same issue and reducing max. lift adds top end performance."

True that. If the slide isn't flush with the top of the bore it will increase the area inside the carb and reduce velocity. The gap will cause turbulence.
Butt dyno probs might not notice it but a real dyno could.

I have a Zeel in my VJ23 and have no problems with the race plugs.
They work great in town and out beating the hell out of it.
Using stock plug wires and cap.
