Well, figured i'd start my project thread. a little background first. i bought this from a kid off craigslist. i don't know why pre-gen ninjas are so damn expensive but they are. bought this one for $1450. since this was my first bike, and not really knowing the running condition of the bike, i didnt want to ride it home the 70+ miles. and with the chopped pipes and busted fairings, for the price, the kid delivered it right to my garage.

so here's the pic that sold me:


that was the good side of it. it was painted flat black, a plus in my book, cuz really...green?...yellow? no thanks. so i rode it for a while. it ran. cracked fairings looked ghetto. that's when the bug hit. i'd been looking for a new hobby. building computers had gotten old. so, had some tools lying around and off with the fairings. i'd been reading some sites, and they touched on the streetfighter subject, and i loved the rawness of it. with the chopped pipes and all, it was inevitable. she was gonna be a fighter.

this is what it became:


rode around with this for a while while i was working on the carbs and other cosmetic things. got some expanded steel and some purple spray paint and made a radiator guard for it. that's when i struck upon the idea to go black and purple. when i was a kid, the first transformer i ever had was Skywarp, the black and purple F-15 Decepticon. i loved that color scheme, and i guess nostalgia crept in. being it was my first bike, it would mirror my first transformer. Project: Skywarp was born. so more plastics came off. having since run across this site, in the meantime and been totally blown away with some of the creativity and craftsmanship i saw, i said all the plastic is coming off. this baby is running butt-nekkid. so after taking the rear plastics off and seeing how the assembly worked, i decided to paint the rear grab bar and bar ends purple too. to tie in the theme. after getting all that finished and back together today, here is how she turned out:



i'd previously shaved the hump separating the driver and passenger sections of the seat, so i could slide my ass back and get into a better tuck. i bought some plastic tubing to neaten up the exposed wires. when i flush the coolant i'll prolly paint the overflow tank. i'll use a strip of tape vertically so i can still see the levels.

so let me know what you guys think. this is definitely an on going project, and i'd like to do much more to her. any suggestions and comments are welcome and appreciated. i've uploaded pics to my profile so you can see better pics and more of them. check em out, give me some feedback. i've got plans for further alterations, but i'd like to know what you guys think so far. thanks for checking in.

Hot damn, those are the exhausts I've been searching for! Do you know where they are from bud?
Anyway keep up the work. Swap out the gauges/mirror/headlight and you'll save some weight there too.
The coolant bottle, just ditch it and make one up. I used an ali drink bottle for mine....
As soon as I can afford a TIG setup I'll be chopping the tail on mine and attempting an NSR150sp SSSA conversion....

the Ninja 250 was my first road bike..... I would Remove chain gaurd, remove headlight, remove all turn signals and replace with smaller ones. Then I would find a nice healight setup... which i had an issue with on the Z... and get a pipe..

If you are looking for a cheap exhaust check out DanMoto Exhaust on Ebay or DanMoto.com...

You can get a carbonfiber GP style Exhaust for like $130 or so.... In ur case they may not make it so just order the can and get the midpipe made..

The headers are stock. i'm guessing one of the PO's just chopped down the stock cans and TIG welded them to the headers. i wish i had more info on them, but they came that way. i'm sure she was dropped cuz the cracks in the fairing were where the original turn signal stalks connect. all i can say about your coolant res is holy shit, that's awesome. i've seen those on here and cant believe it. mine's just like a thick plastic milk jug. same color too. why i wanted to paint it, cuz its glaring white.

yeah, those are all plans of mine. the exhaust is gonna be tricky, for the reasons above, plus some of the tabs on the frame that attach the exhaust/rider peg brackets are gone. i've tossed around the idea of going 2-into-1, but most systems go to the right. i'd have to fab something, cuz all i have are tabs on the left. i dont have the resources to handle that, at least right now anyway. the front turn signals i cobbed on. the PO went with flushmounts that i yanked off the fairing and wedged them between the bolts for the headlights, and stuck em with electrical tape for good measure. i'd love to change the headlight and cluster, as well as the stoopid ugly-ass mirrors (switch to bar-ends), but the problem is every single thing is held on by the same frickin bracket. so i gotta do all or most of them at the same time. and i just dont have the cash.

just looking for headlights, if it has streetfighter in the description, it costs $400. what a bunch of rapists. i really dig the two headlight look, but if someone can suggest something else that i don't have to sell my son to afford, then i'm all ears. on the dash, i've thot about pulling the guts out of the stock speedo and tach, and fabbing up some kind of housing for those. gotta see how complex that is inside. also fabbing up some kind of LED job for the tach and idiot lights. the former sounds like a major undertaking, the latter not so much. i'm an electrotard fer sher.

but thanks for the input guys. most appreciated. given your feedback, at least i know i'm on the right track.

Do what I did bud and order your stuff as you can. Order your gauge then your indicators, headlight etc... then when you have it all, fit it up!
As for lights, there are literally hundreds of options. A decent pair of car driving lights is what I last had on mine.

those links got me pitching a tent, but that was short-lived looking at the tags. wow. thats a lot of coin. i'm definitely on a shoe-string budget. the most expensive item i've bought besides the socket set was the gallon of synthetic oil. haha. you might call this a rat bike, almost.

i did find one site that had lights in my range. www.neverland-motor.com

they had headlight setups for like $30-40. too good to be true, i thot for that price, worth a look.

haven't been doing much work, just noodling. taking things apart to see how they work. weathers' been great for riding so i don't want to do drastic tear downs when i'd rather ride.

dismantled the cluster. looks like the tach and speedo units are pretty self-contained once out. i may be able to work with that. thot up the crazy notion of using soup cans for housing each. easy to drill holes into and run wires. its an option. still unsure of how to mount them.

was originally looking at new risers. not the way i want to go i don't think. checking out clip-ons now. eyeing a set on fleabay. unsure of whether i want to raise the forks and mount them up top, or leave the forks and put them under. get the riding position a little lower. stock risers are like 3" tall.

want to redo the seat foam, and possibly the seat pan itself. would have to look at it and see what could be cut from the pan, and it still attach to the bike. but at least i'd like to do the foam, now that my ass is making a hole for itself like a nice comfy couch. maybe make it more like a saddle, with a little padding up front. will wait to see where the clipons land me if i go that route tho.

gonna be doing regular maintenance-type projects this winter hopefully. brakes, chain and sprockets, new tires. the thing is ten yrs old and i wouldn't be surprised if that was the original rear on her. doing all that will allow me some mod projects too, like removing the front fender, and seeing if there's some way to raise the rear. take a good look at the swinger and see what can be done.

Yeah a lot of the light in the link you posted use the kitchen downlight bulbs. Most are 20/25w and rather poor output. You can get 50w bulbs but the lenses are plastic and you may melt it... You'd be better off getting some car driving lamps over those masks....

ive got an 05 ex500. very similar bikes. clip ons are whats right for me, i like the aggressive low riding style. as for the seat, theres not a whole lot you can do with it. but im interested in seeing what you got in your head. you can raise the rear with some new dogbones. thats what i did, gave it about an inch and a half lift. better for handling, but dont want to go any higher cause it could throw it out of whack. i love my 500 but its got its moments when im like, what the hell!!!

You could always drill holes in the upper triple clamp and mount risers, then use clubman bars to get a lower handle bar. This way if you don't like the low position you aren't stuck with expensive clipons you can't use, and you're only a few bolts away from swapping out to drag or dirtbike bars for different positions.

yeah, i was thinking those things wouldn't put out much light. saw another one i liked, but the bulbs are frickin weird and way expensive. to keep the wiring and everything pretty much the way it is, i'd like to stick with the single H4 setup it has now. i'll prolly get some mounting brackets and use the stock lamp, and that should push the light back some. save up for something eventually down the road.

Yeah i was reading thru your one build last nite. sick shit dude. that tail kills me! the one that the dudes were saying looked like the shredder? fucking awesome. yeah, i definitely want the handlebars lower. i was looking at risers that would fit the triple so i could slap on either a clubman, drag or mx bars (you were reading my mind, Bob), but the only ones i found that i thought would work had bolts that were too wide. prolly a good thing, cuz it'd be a bitch to find bars that the angles would match perfectly to where i'd have to put the risers. these ones were actually made for dirtbikes and designed to be parallel on the triple. on mine, they'd wind up angling outward, from the rider perspective. i don't mind the stock risers. it's not like i hate them, but the 250 is designed and marketed as a pretty tame machine, and i want that aggressive position. if it's too aggressive, i can always slap the stock bars back on.

so thanks for the encouragement, guys. oh, and the clipons i'm looking at are about a franklin less than the retail sites are asking, so i'm cool with that. if i don't like em? meh. back on fleabay they go.

stopped off at target on my way home from work today and found the perfect housing for my tach and speedo...2 big ol cans of bush's baked beans. i've pulled the two units out of the cluster and have been trying to figure out how to make it work. the speedo shouldn't be an issue, since there's no electrical involved. realistically, i can install just that and the bike's legal. laws here state you must have a speedo, but dont go beyond that. so tomorrow, i bust out the dremmel and start cutting down the one can (i can only eat so much baked beans) and get some holes in it for the cable and screws. then i just have to figure out how to mount that to the bike when its done. of course i'm gonna have to find a plexi cover for it too, and possibly rubber grommets to keep out the elements. but i keep her garaged, and plan to prime and paint them as well, so should be good. well, off to fleabay to check out clipons and bar-ends.

Hey you could always just bend up your own headlight brackets bud. With mine I just bought some 2 or 3mm aluminium flat bar and bent it around the fork legs then used some 10mm bolts to cinch it up...

Given the price of these things i just might. i'll have to ask around about tools. i dont even have a decent pair of pliers. going to my dad's tomorrow, so i'll see what he has in the basement. but i've found some decent brackets that fit 36mm forks for around $26 shipped. most other places are about double that.

been reading about the rear suspension on these for the last couple days. definitely want to get the rear end jacked up. hoping i can do that without having to replace the shock. at least right away anyway. try the dogbones first. but first, i'll have to find a way to get the rear tire off the ground. bike has no centerstand. maybe grab a milk crate from somewhere...

clipons and barends are in the mail! now, the waiting game...

I know my 250 is pretty shit, but all the stuff I did on it was with basic tools. An angle grinder, drill and a pair of multigrip pliers to bend the brackets up....
I know these don't raise the rear much and they're a little pricey, but it's an option:

shit, dude, how do you find this stuff?!? i google something and i get thru the first page and cant find what i'm looking for and give up.

so the shorter the dogbone, the lower the swingarm is and the higher the tail. that's how i understand it. so soupy's are more aimed at lowering your bike, like a low-rider, which means i'd only get to raise the tail by an inch and a half? yeah, doesnt seem like much for that price. but then that's the difference at the dogbone, right? would translate to quite a bit more at the tire, wouldn't it?

How much did the clip ons ruin you?

If you really want to go the adjustable dog bone route, I a26543 going to your local lowes or tractor supply and put your own together. But a stock ex500 shock will give you extra height as well as a better handling ride. Often they can be picked up for about $30 or so. It's easier to remove than the lower dog bone bolts, at least on mine.

haha. yeah, i should buy stock in lowes, just about everything for my bike was bought there. i'll have to check the hardware section. already have to go cuz i need another nut and bolt for the engine mount brackets. clipons ran me $62 shipped. cheapest i could find for 36mm. i've read about swapping the shock. they've used everything from a 500 to a 750. may look into that as a winter project.

Make your dog bones from 25mmx6mm steel flat stock. Should cost about $5. Another $5 for 4 bras bushings if you want to get fancy.

woooot! never so happy to see the mailman! clipons came this morning, just as we were heading over to my dad's to all get haircuts. luckily, broski had a milkcrate in the basement, so now i had a lifter. when we got home, got to DW! worked on my girl's tack box, as she's moving her horse in a couple weeks, and had to get the feet, casters and handles on it...oops, wrong forum...

anyway, man, getting the clipons on wasn't the hard part, it was getting the other shit onto the clipons. that shit was a bitch! i was getting throwing-screwdrivers frustrated. i dont know about other bikes, but the ninjettes have a little nub inside the throttle and choke housing to keep them from rotating around the bars during use. well damn me if i could get the holes drilled into the new bars and everything lined up, so i just said fuck it and ground down the nubs using my dremmel. screwed them together real tight, got everything mounted and adjusted to where i need it, aaaannnndddd FINALLY GOT THAT GDF'N MOUNTING BRACKET OFF THE FRONT END!!!! ugly POS. anyway, after getting it all on and checking clearances with the tank, i get all ready to go for a quick test drive. real quick, as i have no headlight, blinkers, or speedo. 3 equipment violations right off the bat, here in NYS. so i fire it up, and wham, it starts to downpour. LOL. but i took it out anyway, just around the block. the clutch lever was real stiff, but found out when i got back that the cable was bent at a really tight angle. fixed that and it loosened to where it was. seriously considering going the cheap route with the headlight mounting bracket now, as i'm broke. LOL. and now that i've freed up the old riser bolt holes, i'm brainstorming for ways to mount the gauges, once i get them done. start on those tomorrow, i hope.
