Hello All,

Noob here...for now. I am building an 86 Zx1000r fighter. First build and it's going okay. I need a few of you pros to go to for specific questions.

1. Water pump - how do you know if it good or bad?
2. Why does a bike have a thermostat? Is it to build pressure?
3. Carbs - float bowl height issues. Do all the jets/ports sit in gas or just the main one. What are the best ways to diagnose issues. Info or websites to go to would be helpful.
4. Headlights, break lights, and turn signals. I need a place to go to find cool and interesting options.
5. Any places to go for great info in general.

if the water pump is going bad it will either leak or not pump coolant through it
the thermostat is there to build up heat in the motor. motors and oils are designed to work in a certain temp range, usually 160-220 give or take. thermostat stays closed until 160-180 depending on the bike. then it opens and the radiator maintains its temp.
for the carbs. take them off. clean them thoroughly then clean them again.
for lights you can look around on here and see what you like. people here sell stuff (once you have 50 posts you can buy here) ebay is worth a look. and a couple other sites.
this place it probably the best place for inspiration and such

There is a little hole on the bottom side of the water pump that seems to be leaking oil. Not sure where the oil is coming from. On the engine side I don't understand how the oil would get through and on the coolant side there is no oil and no coolant leaking through the hole. Does this make sense.

on the carbs - they are clean, extremely clean. I am having trouble adjust my floats. I am sure the main jet is to sit 100% in gas but what about the other openings. When the bowls are to high, gas comes out of the front of the carb where those two little holes are. Sorry really bad with names. The manual says 17 mm but I put them there and 3 were fine and one over flowed. I think it might be the piece that is attached to the float and stops the fuel from comming down.
