Well I went to go start my r1 today and got nothing well almost nothing. So I checked the voltage on the battery I got 11.7 which obviously isn't enough to start the bike so I charged the battery for 5 minutes and she fired up. I just want to double check with guys that its a going bad stator before I drop the $$ on 1. What do you guys think? Sounds like a stator huh

Is this the first time it's done it? Could be a shit battery starting to gasp its last breaths. I would think it highly unlikely that a stator would be bad in a 99 model Yamaha, especially a R1. The 99 R6 I was dealing with shit on 2 fuel pumps before we found one that stayed alive and the owner was becoming convinced it was more than just a pump, but alas, it was just a $40 purchase on ebay and everything was right as rain.

If the bike has been sitting for any period of time, I would figure battery.

Have you checked if it is charging when running? The stator should put out voltage while the bike is running, if it doesn't and it is all running on battery, then you need to invest in a new stator. ;)

Yes I forgot to put that in there but after I got it to crank over I checked again it went down and wasn't coming back up.
If I charge the battery when the bike is off it'll fire right up then I go for a ride turn the bike off and then try to start it again I get a half added attempt till I charge it again. I'm pretty positive it's the stator. I found a great deal on one in the weirdest place Amazon.com so I bought it.

Still, checking the charging output while the bike is running will give you a definite answer on whats going on. Never a bad thing to have spare parts though if it comes to it. Would be better to have the piece of mind that the stator is brand new than risk a mid ride failure that leaves you stranded far from home or help. ;)

I did check it while running it went down and I waited a couple minutes of letting it idle and snapping the throttle a couple times and it just kept going down I'm just glad I made it home the stator should be here in 3 days

Right on man, yeah, that is character dead stator and running off nothing but battery. Sucks, but at least you have it sorted, didn't really need any help either, you had that diagnosed and fixed before the first reply to the thread. Rep for that. ;)
