The bike will have a 3-cylinder engine, and will be used as a research for future production models.

I don't know what's gonna happen, but it is definately nice to see them stir things up a little bit. Trying new things is how a lot of the best things are discovered, or at least more so than beating old designs to death! I'm sure it will be interesting though. BMW has some seriously brilliant engineers and incredible facilities, so if they really set out to do this, and study "highly dynamic processes in engine and driving dynamics management under extreme conditions," then I am sure they will learn some new tricks, and the key statement is, "with an eye toward production models." So, they are basically doing what they have always done in the car industry: use racing for R&D, as well as publicity and company image. So, perhaps BMW will have some hot new 800cc sport bikes coming to market around 07 or 08, but I guess we'll just have to wait and see!

Thats good, it will be a nice step for BMW. Right now, at least for their sport and naked bikes, your options are limited. It starts at 650cc then it jumps all the way 1200cc! So, I think having an 800cc bike in there would be a nice step in the middle.
