I'm starting my training for a couple arduous mountain climb races, and I anticipate buying a new (possibly old) bike. My current racing bike is an older Cervelo S5 with rim brakes. A store advised me that I would benefit from having disc brakes of some kind for the steep descents in a mountain stage race (mechanical or hydraulic.) Are disc brakes absolutely necessary for these events as I'll probably get a lighter climbing bike? Rim braked bikes can be found for a good price, but most disc braked bikes are either brand new or significantly more expensive.
