Hey guys,

So a friend of mine has a 1999 Buell X1 Lightning he wants to sell me for $2800. The bike is a former racebike and in fair-to-poor condition. It's mostly complete and has an allegedly rebuilt and upgraded motor (1400 cc). When he started it for me the other day (he brought it to a mutual friend's birthday party to show me it) it seemed like it was only running on one cylinder, which could mean almost anything. So, I didn't get to ride it.

According to NADA.com, a low retail price is $1,831 and an average price is $2,410. This doesn't take into account the upgraded motor, but really that's the only major selling point of the bike. So, right off the bat I think he's asking too much for it.

I'm supposed to go back to my friend's house tomorrow after work to check it out some more and do a little fiddling on it to see if I can get the other cylinder firing so I can take it for a spin.

So...any advice or general opinions? A part of me is already telling me to walk away from it, but I want to know what you guys think. Thanks!

That price seems high, and don't the tube framed Buells have a lot worse rep the the xb's?

WAY TOO MUCH money. If its in fair to poor condition. offer him 1500 bucks especially running on one cylinder. as a race bike its prolly had a hard life.

They do, but the later ones are supposed to be the best of the bunch. It's a bit hard to judge this bike though because of the upgraded motor. I'm going to try to get more info on it. I do agree that the price seems high, though.

I agree it's overpriced. I found a nicer one in Denver for under $2000.

The thing is, he probably paid $1500 for it. He's put a bunch of new parts on it and the motor is supposedly freshly rebuilt. He said I have to break in the motor.

Anyway, I'll have a better opinion on it once I really check it out tomorrow. Obviously, my friend is going to have to go down in price if I do decide I want it.

An "upgraded" engine running on one cylinder isnt much of an upgrade at all. Its only upgraded if he did it right Pheebs.

Buell values are in the crapper right now. I've been seeing XB12 Lightnings go for $3000-$3200 lately. I see 08-09 1125R's selling for $4500-$5500. Tell him you'll give him the $1500 he paid for it. Remember, mods usually do not increase a bikes value.

Ask him who did the 1400cc job on it. That's a pretty big jump for that motor.

What other "new parts" were put on it? What about it is in bad condition? Does it have a belt or chain?

Thats interesting, over here its the other way around. A Buell specialist told me when I had mine (XB12) that the transmission bearings in the XB are junk, built down to a price. Story goes the beancounters at HD got freaked by the chassis cost and instructed the costs to be recouped in other places......also,the XB doesn't have the trapdoor gearcase so any tranny work means splitting the whole lump. I sold mine when I found swarf stuck to the transmission drain plug.....:(
But then, another friend has an S1,and to date he's lost the number plate, footrests off twice, exhaust fell off once, numerous other vibration-related incidents......SOB can ride the fucker, though!! :LolLolLolLol:

Loved that fucking bike.

I'd ask for proof of the engine work, reciepts, pics, anything. Then gently explain to him if it ran well on both cylinders, you may pay his asking price. I'd also(really hard to do) get some sort of paper saying if the engine goes boom in xxx many miles, something happens. A fresh rebuild should not be running on one cylinder, and if so, I'd be running away.

For some reason once HD dumped Buell everyone with a Buell thought they where sitting on a gold mine and tried to sell theirs for a lot of money. I've seen a ton of junky ones with excellent condition / low mile asking prices. I offered a guy like $1200 for this pile of junk Buell a few months back because he did not post a price he just said to make an offer. Dude passed and said he was looking to get like $3500 for it. LOL

If the motor were upgraded recently it would run right. Put bluntly? Sounds like your friend is lying. I tell people with that story that unless they have receipts for every part and the labor to build this amazing upgraded mill, I pay for it like it's bone fucking stock.

I will differ on what to do though. My suggestion? Walk away. Without knowing exactly what you are getting into with a problematic engine ANY price is too high.

Also, modifications don't add value. Especially engine mods. If done by someone who doesn't totally know what they are doing you're just buying someone elses mistakes. Seriously, don't waste the money on it. Look for a stock one with low miles and a clear title.

Sounds like you did the right thing; I'm sure you'll be able to find another (better) one. :)
