hey guys. I have a quick question. I was trying to connect the gas tank on my 85 zx600, but am having a problem. the primary line will not reach the right side of the petcock. should there be an adapter between the petcock and the line (all it is is a hose)? I really don't know how to connect it. Thanks.

Zxpert...I like that lol

Is your fuel tap the one that's built into the side of the tank, a really big one? The petcock hidden behind that? On those, I don't recall there being any sort of adaptor, it's usually just a line with a hose clamp. Is the routing on the line correct? Has anything been changed or flipped? By primary line do you mean primary fuel supply from the tank, or primary delivery to the rest of the bike?

yes, it is the primary feed from the tank. I can connect the little one on the back, but the primary side (on the right) isn't reaching. even if I get a longer piece of hose, I am not sure it will fit OVER the primary feed from the petcock. ???

Are they all hooked up properly? I don't see how it could come off and not go back on...unless something has fallen off or is connected wrong.

Pics?

I'd make sure it wasn't caught on anything further down-hose first.

My next suggestion would be maybe it was cut short to put an inline fuel filter in at some point and somewhere along the line the filter and other section of line got lost.

But if you took the tank off the bike, and it won't go back on, then maybe it is plugged in wrong.

If all else fails, just make sure you have the right tubes going to the right places, then track down some new tubing. A hardware store or home depot should have something that'll work.

did you accidentally hook up the main fuel line to the carb vent? i only ask because i had a bike just yesterday that came in the shop with the same problem. if the hose is connected to the carbs near the top of the carb, not the bottom, then you're not in the right spot.

other than that, i say just get a longer piece of hose.

I never pulled it off the bike. It was never connected when I got it. I was trying to hook it to the hose that was coming out of the top of the carb. doesn't that hose connect to anything? I can't find any other hose to connect. MAybe the hose was torn off. I'll check more into it tomorrow.

if it's at the top of the carb, that's the vent line. those normally get connected to the airbox, or you can just leave ithem open. look towards the lower rear part of the carbs, and there's a fitting to hook the fuel line too. just get a piece of fuel line that's the right diameter, and hook it up there, then to your tank. the fitting is probably in between the #2 and #3 carbs, if it's a single inlet setup, which if there's only one output on the tank, it is.
