May as well get the welding talk out of my build thread.

This will be a good place to organize my welding projects, show my gear, and post my progress.

Have less than a month before I get into 2 open lab classes. Pretty sure I can do whatever I want, which is TIG welding my custom bikes & parts. Need to learn how first, but I should get my projects in order ASAP and develop a plan.

Even if I don't get good enough to do the finish welding, I need to fabricate and tack together the parts. Looking forward to making some progress on the bikes!

I don't see any content warning
A couple of hours after my curse-out rant, I tuned in, and the content warning was removed, and so was my entire curse-out post.

Now, they're both back.

Fuck this shit, and whoever is responsible.

It's just the egregious ignorance that pisses me off. People that are too stupid for the job should be fired.

A person clearly ignorant of military history and the tradition of government issued combat knives with skull crushers, in WWI, WWII, and Vietnam. Vietnam pilots carried skull crushers to bash their way through the plane canopy, if necessary. And 99% of skull crushers have never been used to actually crush skulls.

What about the fact that the symbol of this website has a fucking knuckle duster on it? And the highest compliment I can make on this site is :knucks:?

How about the fact that there are countless pics of knives of all types on this website and discussions of knife making and combat knives. And pics every kind of fucking firearm, including assault rifles?

Knives with skull crushers are censored nowhere on the internet, and are available on amazon.com. You stupid bitch.

After looking at some pics of skull crushers, I realized my design wasn't very good.

It was too long, and might get stuck in a zombie skull. So, I shortened it up.

Then, I was trying to seal up the guard, and my Miller TIG took another dump. Reset didn't work this time. Will have to change booths and fix the damage to the knife.

It's gotta just be some stupid fucking code or some AI bullshit. There is literally no one at the wheel here dude. The admin hasn't even logged on in over a month

I was thinking I might be yelling at a computer program.

But the details on that photo are just random numbers from my cell phone. It's not like the photo is labeled "skull crusher".

And my post disappearing and coming back is suspect. Whatever. I wasn't really mad, it was just my way of saying there are lots of things on this site that maybe should be censored, but aren't. So, if you're going to censor me, then at least explain yourself.

Plus, ROBBO said we couldn't get banned, no matter what we do.
Heated the blade to that bright salmon color, and quenched in oil. Not sure what type of oil was in the quench tank, but it was very light and clean, like vegetable oil.

File skates over the blade, and makes a nice high-pitched sound. I do believe it worked!

Getting back to basics. Started doing some aluminum butt welds, focusing on penetration.

Have a long way to go, but improving slowly. Was able to go non-stop, start to finish, on about half the beads- that's new. Still have to stop and re-start sometimes to adjust my torch hand, or the filler rod.

Got some penetration on all my welds, but need to work on consistency. Also, my starts, stops, and spot welding need a lot of improvement.

Got a mix of convex, flat, and concave beads. I started noticing a small divot in the weld pool before it sinks down. That helps. Also getting better at filling up the depression fully with filler before moving on.

My travel speed is definitely too slow. Having decent results, but I'm sure the coupons would be very warped, if I wasn't using a welding/purge fixture.

Getting better at staying on-line, and not veering off in the wrong direction.

I think the reason the instructors are big on penetration is because most students are focused on certification. I guess it takes a strong weld to pass the tests.

I've got a stack of aluminum coupons with various quality of beads from my practice. Thought I would test some, and see how they hold up. There's a big press they use. I think it's 20,000 lbs of pressure.

I throw away the worst beads, and save the better ones. For testing, I started with the worst ones that I kept.

First 3 pretty much just snapped in half.

Next 3 ripped apart on the weakest part of the welds.

Last 3 held together pretty well.

Still hanging on to my best ones for a while. Functionally, they're probably okay. Need to work on consistency, and better appearance.

Haven't had much cool stuff to post lately.

Trying to figure out some better technique. Did some padding on aluminum sheets last night. The sheets are 1.5" x 6" and I covered at least 7 sheets. I was looking at the beads at the end of the night, and realized I welded over 25 feet of aluminum. The welds aren't beautiful, but should get better if I do more of this.

Started messing around with the frequency control. Need more practice to figure it out.

Been mostly trying to lay beads with consistency. Slowly improving.

Still have to try fun stuff, once in a while. First try weaving a weld. Need to tighten up the dimes, they're hardly overlapping. The double and triple weaves were done in one pass. Not good, but it's a start.

Lately, I've been using (5) 1.50" x 6.00" coupons to make these pieces. (4) fillet welds + (4) outside corner welds. Then, I run beads or weaves on the sides.

Off from school in-between semesters.

Here's a peek at my holiday project. Was going to decorate a skeleton like a xmas tree, but you guys know what happens with my projects. The holiday skeleton is becoming something I couldn't have imagined, and completely different than my original idea. Haven't got very far yet.

Was going to add white hair and beard. Then decided, I don't want it to look like Santa's skeleton. That would be fucked up. And I don't want it to look like a real skeleton, at all. I want it to look like a medical anatomy skeleton.

Had to cut and sew the hat down almost 50% to fit the skull. Need to design and fab a hanger out of aluminum welding rod for the disco mirror balls.

Made a matching disco mirror centerpiece tonight. Past 3 am now, so will get a pic tomorrow.

Messed up last night. Decorated the unit on the wrong side. One end shows, so I lined up the mirrors with the pipe end. Other end shows PVC.

Just got it fixed. Chopped off the extra PVC. Also found some epoxy, so I can work on the hanger.
