Bob, that is a very good point 95% of the time. However I believe EX5 (and Racing Geek) would both do well in Industrial Design or possibly Transportation Design. In those fields its all about the portfolio. There are a lot of ID jobs available right now, but its very competitive getting in with good firms. Being able to interview well is important, but for what these guys want (and can) do, the quality of their portfolios will be crucial. Even when I interview engineering candidates I also ask for their portfolios. Just another thing to think about.

Im not sure about racing geek, but right now the main reason I wanna go is to learn how to design my own stuff and then fab it up. I would like to be in business for myself. Not so much as a "custom bike builder" but more of a wide variaty of work.
 
IMO designing stuff is as simple as having an idea and somehow putting that idea in a media that others can see and understand whether it's a sketch, a rendering, a video, or even a detailed verbal description. If you want to learn how to fab stuff (safely) I think mechanical engineering would be good. I've had classes that cover statics, thermo and fluid dynamics, and several covering all kinds of materials and their properties. I feel like I have a good grasp of the things required in that field but it isn't as exciting as I thought it would be. I'm about half way done with the program and I think I've done everything needed to leave early with an associates degree but I still wonder if that will be enough to get a decent job.

i agree with some other peeps that rsubframe has no visual "weight" to it and would be much more balanced looking if you did part or all of it in the large tube. what if you move the lower tube to mount half way between where it is and the top tube is? keep it up looks close to done!!
 
yup, thats next! I have to make a jig using the existing swingarm, and figure out what size tubing Im going to run. im thinking 1 1/4". I still have a couple feet of 1.5" and it would be nice to use it up, plus its strength to weight ratio will be higher. But i think it might look a bit goofy with such big tubing. I need to find someone who can bend 1 1/4" for me and figure out the radius of ther die and then design the swingarm. For now though I would like to at test ride the bike with the stock swinger and make sure i dont have any major handling issues.
Double wishbone swinger. Id like to see it.

Exactly, except with the shocks between the upper and lower arm, counteracting the change in clearance with suspension travel.

Never seen that before, always thought about it. Any thoughts on advantages/disadvantages?
 
its the same principle as a pair of A arms on a car. as it moves up the wheel/brake mount would be kept on the same plain of motion as the frame meaning you should be able to slam the back brake one and the suspsension will be isolated from it.

in the mountain the bike world you see it on a lot of downhill and cross country bikes.

So you are saying connect a shock on the lower arm with the leg ends in this picture to the frame pivot point of the upper arm or even the back of the frame of the bike above with one shock on each side? I've thought about that too and I don't see why that couldn't be done. It would have to be a really small shock compared to what is found on most modern motorcycles though. Probably a short and stiff mountain bike shock. MMM described the braking advantage.

yea I can design stuff now and I have a pretty good idea of what im doing fabricating wise, but I would really like to know more of the science behind it. Right now I kinda make "educated guesses" if you know what i mean.

Thats Brian Fullers bike right?

I know what you mean, Im pretty proud of the bike so far, but I dont think its quite what I had in envisioned though. Im happy with how everything turned out, but when its all put together its just not quite there.

I went with the 3/4" tube to make it as light as possible, that was one of my main goals with this bike since its only a 500. I may go with a slightly bigger aluminum tube. but for now im gonna use this one.

Also, I built it like that to support my weight better, not that im really heavy lol, but its tiny tubing. The main reason though, is that i would like to make some sort of airbox and I dont want it to stick out past the subframe. I do a suprising ammount of offroading:wtf:, not to mention theres always the threat of flying rubber. :D

no real progress lately... I have been busy working on my damn car. Im debating wether to just leak test the tank with water or alcohol and patch if necessary, or just kreem it now. Im leaning towards just leak testing it so if I need to modify the tank in any way I wont ruin my sealer. (At least untill everything is done) I really want to just get it fired up so i can test ride it and get some motivation to completely finish it.
