For anyone that has switched from clip ons to moto-style bars.....what do you think of the handling? I may wanna do that type set up for my GSXR fighter project, but I don't wanna lose any of the handling/feedback from using the clip ons, like I am used to.

Also, was anyone able to do it with out getting longer lines? I would really like to avoid that, if I can. I actually wanna be able to switch back and forth between clip ons and this set up, since I have multiple top tripples and might use this bike as the occasional track bike.

Thanks for feedback.

you'll need longer brake lines. you can make the rest reach, but it's not pretty. You dont get as much front end feedback, and with less weight on the front end it's not quite as planted but if you fiddle with the suspension enough you can get it dialed in pretty good. shimming the rear would help.

definately not as much feedback, and an overall completely different feel. I dont feel like i'm as much a part of the bike with dirtbike bars, but most of my riding is around town, so its more comfortable for me and easier to react to traffic faster.

A lot more leverage. Great for turn in, especially swerving around traffic. Also a lot easier to ride slow-speed like parkings lots. A lot better visibility in traffic, especially if you lanesplit. Also a lot easier to control the bike around intersections and a lot less twitchy around bumpy curves.

doug, i did the same thing with superbeast for years. switch back and forth for trackdays. i did use the longer lines so switching wasn't a problem. took about an hour to do it. and when i was lazy i used the bars for a track day. and yes it makes a sizable difference. one is feel and another is confidence. though the tl's are known to shake a little. the bars exacerbated that situation. and had a bit of oscillation in the bars that puts butterflies in the belly. but i delt with it and had a great time. look i ain't no rossi but i can shake a leg or two when it comes to trackin it. pass em in the tight stuff then put it in park for the straights. then rinse and repeat. i wasn't in it for lap times just fun. good luck and what year gsxr project you got? cheers, dan

I definately enjoy my dirt bars better than my clip ons. It took a little bit to get used to, but now I can ride that bike all day and not feel sore or achy...I do get a bit more vibes thru them, but whatever, get a good set of gel grips and it will almost disappear. I was lucky with my gixxer and didn't have to lengthen any lines.

Make bar inserts.. silicone and steel BBs. Take care of your vibration problem.

The clip ons are definitely better for hanging off but that doesn't stop me any. Kinda nice to have some leverage when moving a busa around.

I like it alot better.. Its WAY more comfortable, I feel less vibration, and highers stoppies lol

OH.. yeah I made the front end a little softer and jacked up the back end a bit to make the bike more "flickable" in the corners. But even so before I did the new rear end swap, AND when I had the higher bars and risers last year I was still able to drag knee.

Its all in the suspension settings, and DB bar height/adjustment. You can get back SOME of the clip-on handling back but not all of it cuz your high center of gravity with the DB bar's. You just gotta fuck with it a bit

OK, guys, thanks for the replies. I am 95% sure I am gonna do it....it will be nice to be able to have both and try it and see. I like riding my SV, and I liked riding my track bike on the track for 20 minutes at a clip....so this should make it more comfy to ride for longer times. :D

The added leverage for me, makes it feel 100 lb's lighter ! I ride it sooooooo different than my other gixxer. Shit, i just lean it over and spin the back end around like my dirt bike ! :party-smiley: :D

Love it for the comuting thing  :letsride:

OK, thanks. Define shimming the rear?
stacking washers or shims between the top of the shock and the frame clevus to effectively raise your rear ride height. Or get an aftermarket shock with ride height adjustment. Or pull the forks through the top triple clamp some(though this might be tricky depending on your bar/riser setup.

Oh, OK, I could do that on the GSXR cause of the way the shock mounts, but would not be able to do it on the SV....wait.maybe I could.

This is how mine was when I first lifted it. This was too much though and I backed it off 1 or 2 washers. $0.45 at any hardware store.
