I was thinking about putting a 240 on the rear and a 170 or 180 tire on the front of my 01 gixxer 1000 once it comes back from getting powder coated. Has anyone heard or seen this done before?? I am just going for something I've never seen down here in Florida! I really am going for something different!!

since i saw my first fight-machine i LOVED the look. . .

however...i just dont think id be willing to sacrifice my handling that much. . .

if i was building a show bike or a third or fourth bike..sure why not?!

def. looks badass.

if you can take riding like that, by all means, DO IT!

:metal:

Just to throw it out there, this will seriously seriously murder your handling.

The wider front tire is going to change angles a loooot slower and when you're leaned over it's going to want to fall in or stand up (depending on the tire profile). If you've ever experimented with minute rear tire changes, imagine that... except on the front, and waaaaaaaay more effective. The front is a lot more sensitive to profile changes than the back.

yes it would. more so the profiles are what your looking at along with the extra weight and mass spinning and preventing you from turning the bike easy. and finding the right profiles to match your leanangles would be pretty important. heck just running mix/matched brands and compounds can really change the handling. some good some horrible. i was running a mixed set. michelin and dunlop just because that is what was laying around and i needed something to pass inspection till i had the money. handled a bit quirky till i got into a slapper and i landed..........on my head! i learned from experience. (injured rotator cuff in my shoulder and some rash)

my brother put a 180 gsxr rim/tire on the front of one of those M109's but that was just to move it around while the stockers were off getting chromed. brakes and stuff weren't hooked up either. looked pretty beefy though. it really matched that bike.

Yeah. The difference in size between the tires isn't what makes the big difference, it's the shape of each tire and it's role in cornering that matters.

So if i go with some quality tires (which is the only way to go) the difference should not be that bad?? Ive ridden bikes that were stretched out 6 inches and had a 240 on the rear and didn't notice "that much" of a difference.

The difference will be a lot. There's a damn good reason that almost every sportbike uses a 120 front tire these days. If you like to rail on it, you'll notice a difference and I'm warning you, it's going to be a sour feeling.

Walking up to the bike you're gonna see that big front tire and think, "Man, that's wicked!"

Walking away from it you're going to wish you had your old gixxer back.

I can see your point. Thats why I've gone through 5 bikes in 2 years!!
I'm always looking for something better, but then want that same bike back 6 months later!

I don't know any that put a fatty on the front, but from what I understand, if you put a fat tire on the rear, it does even it out to put a fat tire on the front as long as they have a good curve to them. it is good to match up your tires no matter how wide. the overall performance will never be better or even equal too the skinnier tires.
