Whatever shame I felt in taking my bike to a shop and having someone else do work to it was masked by my feelings of idiocy to learn that the whole 'running on 2 cyl' problem was caused by a very easy, totally obvious electrical gremlin that I should have caught myself (and saved me $80 in labor in the process).
That aside, I was psyched to finally ride again today. I work a lot and have had serious lack of motivation to work on it because riding keeps me happy and motivated, and I couldn't! She still needs a lot of work, lots of little projects to be completed, but it runs and rides so that's all I need.
Took a ride to a buddy's house this evening, and was convoying back into the city behind them to hit up another party. They wave me by on a straight, flat, newly paved section of highway. Speed limit 50mph. my speedo isn't mounted properly or connected to the battery, so doesn't light up at night. Knowing this, I told myself to 'take it easy' on this section, so brought it up to what I figured was about 65. Blue lights come on in the opposite direction!
Cop pulls a U-ie in the middle of the highway at like 60mph (man crown vics can turn!), I slow down and pull over (not about to run, much less on a straight, flat, highway!)
I had no wallet, so no liscence, no reg, no proof of insurance, and my inspection is at least a year out (no front sigs, no mirrors, no plate light, non-DOT headlight and rear sigs, leaky exhaust). he checks my name and DOB in the system, I come up as legal, so we talk for a bit.
The cliffs notes:
I was actually doing 72 (not as bad as it could have been, considering...)
him- "what year bike is this?" me-"''94" him-"oh, yup. Ducati?" me- "erm.... no. Honda." him- "oh. You been in a wreck with this thing?" me-"uh... no, I just don't like how sportbikes look with all the plastic up front." him-"oh, cause it looks like it's had some work done on it." me-"yeah. a little bit."
Despite not having any papers or inspection and doing 22 over the limit at night, all I got was a warning! just gotta bring all the papers down to the station within 15. I feel like he went easy on me because I was wearing FULL protective gear including draggin' kevlar pants, back plate, and racing gloves. Pretty much no other sporty rider around here wears more than a t-shirt and shorts or jeans. Also, I could tell he didn't like rice rockets, and mine doesn't look like a plastic POS so that helped a lot. He said he was very glad that I didn't try to run (although he was worried when I didn't slow down at first- no mirrors, remember?), and I said I could outrun a cruiser but not a camera or radio waves...
All in all, I'm lucking fucky! could have been MUCH worse and I don't need any more points on my liscence! Officer was actually cool, shook his hand and rode on...
