so i inherited a broke 1996 water cooled gsxr 600. it runs good with choke on but will barely run with choke off. then with choke off it started to knock but maybe cus of low rpm it could be detonation it had 40,000 miles. it ran good last year. has a yosh slip on and stock air filter so probably no jets. but it ran good last year so im not blaming jets. the guy sent it to a shop and he hooked it up to a gas iv and carb sync gauges and they all looked ok with slight choke. wont run without though. shop guy said low compression in cyl 3. he didnt have time to pull the motor so its pawned on me. i know low compression can be smoothed out with increased rpm to speed the time and make more power on the other three cylinders and mask the miss. if its warmed up i can keep it running with no choke but slight throttle. then if i crack it open it immediately falls on its face but if i slowly open it to 2 grand and get it around there then i can crack it fine but an idle crack wont happen. the idle and only running with choke makes me think carbs. my compression tester only has 14m and 18mm adapters and the plug is ten. lowes didnt have an adapter. if you actually know your shit spout some ideas. no dummys talking about my muffler being scratched makes it run bad.

almost sounds like your carbs need to be cleaned, namely your idle jet. I had the same issue with my 97 gixxer 1100, would only run with throttle or choke, but once you let off it would die and it was showing the same symptoms as yours.....It was a combination of bad gas and clogged carbs. My advice is to thouroughly clean those carbs, you never know what was run thru it if its an "inherited" bike.

Don't be intimidated by these carbs either, they are as simple as pie to dissasemble, clean and reassemble. There are even tutorials on the webs for this, search them out and use them.

ive been a senior ford tech for 7 years now and can do anything on any car or truck with fi and ive never seen the inside of a carb. i know the princaples but never touched one. anyways i went back out and made a rubber grommet for a push style compression tester. and i got 150-145-30-150. added a teaspoon of oil in the cylinder and 150-145-135-150. son of a bitch the rings in cyl3 are shot. i just got done overhauling my bandit 12 so itll be close since my 12 is basically an 11 and these 6's are close. i just resealing the tranny block to the engine block. i used aneorobic sealent for transmission on the bandit. i didnt have any yamalube hope it holds up. guess ill be busy tomarrow.
