Hi, I'm Joel from Kingsbridge in Devon, England. I'm a total newbie to proper bikes as well as to this forum but as I'm not one to do things by halves decided a baptism of fire was in order. I have rebuilt smaller bikes but never a big Jap Four or even been near one so exciting (and no doubt occasionally very frustrating) times ahead.

I have bought an almost completely restored Kawasaki GPz 1100 A2 but am about to pull it apart again to do it my way! The previous owner had it for 12 years in his garage slowly working on it but was taken ill one day and never came out of hospital again. His widow had to sell it but I have no details of the work done other than he spent over £3k on it. It has has braided lines front and rear, the frame has been powder coated as have brake lever, gear lever, stand etc, the electrics are all fine, mini indicators already done, twin round lights at the back, engine is a runner and looks to me like the crankcases have been split and resealed, the exhaust is a hybrid Motad front with N'eta can in gloss black which is one of the first things to come off! I love the look of V&H drag pipes but not sure about the sound!

There are a number of jobs needed to finish it i.e. clutch not operating properly, fork seals leak air, paint-job is not nice (metallic green with spider web, spider and scorpion:spyder:), wheels are the standard skinny things in gold (matching the new gold Renthals). It's a real shame, all the parts have been re-painted or powder coated but I really don't like the look! I'm hoping to sell them on as I replace them with stainless or aluminium parts.

I've decided to replace the entire front end with some fat USD's, wide wheel, bigger discs calipers etc. and the same sort of treatment at the rear end. It would be really handy if I can buy a donor bike with parts that can be easily transferred to mine and sell the rest, maybe even make some money back in the process. Possibly ZZr or ZXR? Once done I'll fiddle with details at my leisure, money permitting.......I love all things billet!

I have found useful sites with bearing charts etc but the swinger is something I need to study, I don't want to be re-working the frame, I'm trying to keep my first build as simple as possible.The overall look I have in mind (for now) being gloss black with stainless/polished aluminium, jacked up rear and either stay with the original GPz look or go with z900/1000 tailpiece and light or something similar. Up front either clip-ons or go the other way with high Z-bars, not sure about lights, I do like the square one but may go for twins instead.

Needless to say the project will probably be quite organic, what I end up with will be determined as the build progresses and to a certain extent by the build itself. I look forward to comments and suggestions and have a Pinterest board for people to pin things to should they wish. You'll have to ask me email me on [email protected] or go to;

Thank-you for taking the time to read this far, and I look forward to many hours on here, perhaps I'll post a progress report from time to time!

Thanks for the welcome guys, and for repping me!? The bike does look pretty good I s'pose, just not my thing though. Still going to strip it and rebuild it. It seems a real shame but I bought it (cheap!) to make it my own personal project rather than finish off someone elses! It's not been ridden since it's been restored so there'll be lots of very nice stock and aftermarket parts going on eBay soon to pay for some of the mods! I'll start a new build thread when the work gets under way.

Welcome to Custom Fighters. if you look under your avatar youll see a series of small green brass knuckles. When someone reps you, you receive rep points and the number of knuckles increases as does your status on the forum. The more cool things you do here the more rep you get. It used to mean a lot more cause it was a lot harder to earn rep. People are way more liberal with it now a days so it doesnt mean as much but it's still a nice gesture. In return the more rep points you get, the more rep points youre able to give with each rep you give someone else...reppy rep retpar reptilian reppa reptard retard reppy rep rap.
