The last week or so the Gix has developed a misfire/backfire and i can't work out what is causing it, it happens every time i ride the bike now! It doesn't happen in any particular gear or rpm (although it's usually high rpms) it seems to be totally random and it's annoying the fuck outta me, it's like the engine cuts out then fires again causing a massive backfire some times it just does it the once other times it will do it 5 or 6 times in very short succession has anyone else had similar probs??? or got any sugestions where to start looking, the bike is comming of the road at the end of the month and i'd like to try to fix it before i take it to bits for the winter.

Right I,ve checked coils and plugs, the carbs were stripped and jetted a couple of month back so they should be ok, i've been through the loom to see if there is a loose conection anywhere but i can find any thing so it's back to the drawing board :(

check the ignition pick up. there's a spec for the air gap at the pickup. also check that there's no junk on the pickup itself.

are you running a stock ignition or an aftermarket (dyna, etc)?

i just thought of something else too. my old 7/12 used to do the exact same thing from time to time. if you're running aftermarket ignition wires, like the 8mm dyna's or something like that, they require you to run the screw on resistors on the plugs. from time to time, they would loosen up, and do just what you've described. i ended up putting a very small lock washer under each screw on resistor, and they stayed put for the most part.

but, if you're still using stock plug wires, that wouldn't apply. just a thought, and worth checking into.

Thanks guys, i've checked the dyna coils connetions and they are ok, last night on the way to work it started to rev at 3000 rpm at tickover so there has to be something sticking or cloged up in the carbs, it well anoying cos they were stripped and rebuilt when the bike was dyno'd
Oh well i'll sort then out when i strip down the bike next week.

I'm thinking 1260cc rebore

No but i figured whats causing it, the sidestand spring has worn out so when i go over a bumpy bit of road it is moving about causing the sidestand cut out to kick in cutting the engine for a fraction of a second and causing a massive backfire
