Ok, I am currently starting a rebuild on a '92 Katana 600 that spent the last part of its life drag racing until the motor blew.

I picked it up on the cheap, and am planning a Fighter that can run consistant times on the track too. I plan on racing the Street ET class so it doesnt have to set any records, just stay consistant and I can dial in the rest.

So far the plan is an '03 or newer GSX-R 1000 motor to fill the void left from the blown motor, No plastics anywhere except Maybe an acerbis headlight (may go with spots mounted on the legs) the only guage I care about is a Tach so I am not sure if I will go aftermarket or try and pick up one to match the gsx-r motor.

Now, my delima.... currently this bike has a "16 yes "16 inch strech on the rear swingarm which equates to around a "75 inch wheelbase. I can see already that it is not streetable like that, so my question to all of you here with expierence is..... What is a good wheelbase on a fighter, that will also be used on the track? should I shorten "10? (that is what I have been contemplating "65 wheelbase) less, more??? my welder is good, and works Cheap, but is slow paced to work it into other projects so this will not be an overnight build, but I hope to have it on the road in '08

Like I said I am open to suggestions

Most of us use stock wheelbase because we ride mostly on the street and twisties.

A 6" stretch is the most I'd want on a streetable drag Katana but I wouldn't recommend anything over 4" if you want to street ride more than drag race.

see if you can fit in a late model gsxr swingarm in. Sell the swingarm thats on the bike now and use the monet to get what you need.

If you want to drag, get one of those wheelie bars for cheap so the bike can still be ridable on the street when you're not draggin. Like you said, that swingarm does make it difficult to ride.

wow! +16?! holy crap. correct. not streetable. i agree with haelo...wouldnt go more than +4 for something streetable. fighters have short wheelbases generally. haelos probably got the largest wheelbase here actually.

but if you want to drag it...i can see your dilemma.

also...not sure if your interested. but there is a BRAND NEW 05 gsxr 1000 motor for sale at my place of work. . .

i think 3 g's for everything with motor, fuel rail/injectors. wiring harness, cdi. all that shit.

pm if your interested.... if not...

this is pretty much what I am starting with.
Picked it up for $200 and it took another $200 for the title (LOOOOOOOG story guy I bought it from never got a title)

but now that I have it titled I am gonna start little by little to get it back in shape.

it is currently strutted so no rear suspension, and I will probably leave it that way, but I will check into the GSXR swingarm.

I would love that Motor setup Adam, but until I get some bills paid off (even longer story Ex borrowed ten grand a week before she burnt off and got our marriage annulled) this is going to remain a LOW budget build, trying to keep progressing on it. I currently have a Suzuki vl800 bobbed and a vl800 chopper project nearing completion so decided to head in a different direction when this bike came about.

The main thing these days is just keeping myself busy in the garage with something to do.

I can appreciate you wanting to keep yourself busy. May I suggest taking one of your finished bikes, finding your ex and running her ass over? That ought to kill some time. (no pun intended)

Just so you know, the newer gsxr motors wont fit without ALOT ALOT of work and not to mention the gas tank wont fit either........wanna know how I know? :) Check out katriders.com

I threw a gsx1100 motor in my bike and with the jet kit, exhaust, pod filters I should be putting around 130-140hp out I HOPE

Now it is starting to sound like a challenge, I checked that other site, but could just find that it would be hard to do.... no specifics.
