still in process of bondo/sanding/prepping rear cowling (WHAT A MESSY JOB! DUST EVERYWHERE!), as well as re-taping most of the harness, clearcoating the fuel tank, and tinting the windscreen. The rear cowling will be flat black with a matte clear just like the tank and fender, but i'll stencil in "600 R" on each side to hint at what the bike originally was. In red, btw, to match the wheels.

that's a great idea, and i totally agree.
but id have a problem relocating the electrical components such as relays, junction box, rectifier/regulator, and igniter. See, it looks like there is a lot of space under the seat in that pic, but that is because the battery was already taken out.

If i were to go that way with the seat/subframe, i would have to wait until i get pod filters/jet kit ($200) so that i could rip out the HUGE air box. Then i would get a sealed battery that i could lay anywhere. This would certainly give me more room to work with.

im not very pleased with the subframe that i have set-up right now, and once i have access to some real welding equipment I will whip up a new one out of some square steel tubing...perhaps going the shorty route.


this bike project of mine is a super budjet project. So far i havent spent more than $600...and that includes the price of the bike. She's an '88 Kawasaki Ninja 600R (zx600C)

made some good progress today. couple coats of matte clear on the tank, more on the fender, finished the windscreen, re-taped the entire wiring harness (nasty nasty 20 year old tape sucks), bondo-ed the cowling for the fourth time, and mounted a bar end mirror with a quick custom bracket.

ive been working for 10 days straight to make more money for text-books, and im at work right now. I'll assemble most of the bike tonight and take some more pics.

update: here is where she stands...

i love how, in some of those pics, the oil stain in the road makes the bike look like it's floating.
tomorrow, i'm headed to the DMV (Satan's Asshole) for some license plates =)

yes, she has a taillight, but her ass is too ugly to show off right now. I cut the humongous stock tail light with a hack saw, used fiberglass resin to glue a cut piece of lexan acrylic sheet to seal the housing, and i fiberglassed some mounts made out of cut, drilled, and bent sheet metal on the inside of the cowling to mount it all. It's still covered in tape since im still bondoing, but ill do what i can tomorrow.
Then, all i have to do is paint the muffler, but menards was all out of high-temp flat black tonight. oh well. The muffler is a 15" long glass-pack that i ordered from JC Whitney for $23. At one point i even had a crazy idea to paint the muffler black with a one-inch thick red spiral going around it...=p
Right now, i'm not running a coolant overflow reservoir. Instead, i have the hose rise up about 2-3 inches after the coolant cap before exiting out near the rear brake pedal. Hopefully, having the hose go up after the cap will prevent me from losing coolant just by tilting the bike or by someother g-force that would sabatoge my coolant system...haven't tested it out yet, though.

Tomorrow, depending on how far i get, i may post up a video of how the bike sounds, revvs, etc.

Any suggestions for the build? This is my first motorcycle, and my first project. Any close-up pic requests?

Suggest you run a coolant overflow bottle - you'd be surprised how much fluid you'll lose without one (and it's a PITA to have to keep topping up the rad). Do the DIY mount of your favourite drink can behind the radiator RHS.

Looking good - and like most people here, I wouldn't have picked a GPX600 as fighter material.....

the only thing i notice that should be changed is the forks, it actually looks pretty beefy, but those forks look weak.
