Shitty feeling of the week....

2790 Views 20 Replies 15 Participants Last post by  chevy42083
...still sleeping as my girlfriend leaves for work. She comes back in... comes into the room and asks... "Ummm... where are our bikes?"

Some MF'er pulled up with an enclosed trailer and just loaded up BOTH of our bikes. Mine was getting up there in mileage (34k miles), and probably needed a bunch of maintenance soon, but i was NOT ready to be done with it.

She laid down her SV 4 months ago, took 3months to find a replacement she liked, got a great deal on it,.... and it was stolen within a month. Low mileage, new paint, needed nothing. Barely had her plates 2 weeks. Her title came 2 days after the theft.

Luckily (I guess), I had been too busy to do the expensive maintenance and install the parts we had laying around (gear indicator, power commander, exhaust packing, grips, mirrors, new signals, etc etc). I did spend all day doing a 3 stage wax on the entire bike to bring it back from 6yrs and 34k miles of fading. It looked amazing

Shitty feeling number 2, I didn't have theft coverage. Could've SWORN I did. Oh well, it wasn't worth THAT much. I see them for ~$3k on craigslist... down to $2k, if lucky... all with 1/2 the miles as mine. Then she hears from insurance on her bike... they pay NADA + accesories.... Mine NADA values higher than hers... $4500... and I had quite a bit of mods they would've covered. I did just get an inheritance that would easily cover a new bike, but "missing out" on $5k+ still sucks. Maybe my rates won't go up since it wasn't a claim?

Now i want to replace it...ready to "step up" to a bit nicer bike, but not wanting to risk it while I still have to park outside. I know I will NOT wait till I have a house to get another. New one will be chained to my truck at night. I still don't want a "nice" bike sitting outside.... I was ready to have a beater commuter and a weekend fun bike. Now I've gotta choose.

sorry... had to rant, knew most of you would understand (some will blame me completely for not having it garaged). I know i don't have it as bad as some (it wasn't my only transportation), but it IS what kept me sane with my daily commute.

Anyways, carry on...

That blows goat. I always worry about mine. The apt I used to live at had a garage. Wouldn't be hard to get into. The house I bought doesn't, but has a rubber maid shed, that I cram the riding mower, push mower, weed whacker, and bike in. Keep it locked, but still, I always stress. Moved to the sticks, so any dip shit with a pickup truck and bolt cutters could roll up and jack my shit. Best thing about riding a rat fighter ninja 250, I guess, cuz it doesn't look worth much at a quick glance...

Sorry to hear that bro, hope the bastards are caught and fried like a chicken leg...

...there's been a string of thefts around here, the crack heads from across the river have been coming into Oregon to steal shit, most people round here aren't use to lockin stuff up so they are easy prey

that sucks man. really sorry to hear that. hopefully they will find them. why not build a shed big enough to lock 2 bikes into?
FOOKIT!

PMd ya mate.
Fuck a thief
I live in an apartment for now. They do have garages... which I'm "on the waiting list" for. But the garages aren't attached, and not visible from the apt. I think I'd feel LESS secure with a garage here. I've thought about enclosed trailer to park them in.... just seems like a total PITA.
Next bikes will be chained to other vehicles, or to each other in such a way they can't just grab and go. Alarm disc locks at MINIMUM.

Honestly... It's bitter sweet that I didn't catch them. Sleepless nights of thinking have a TON of scenarios through my head. Hand gun, shotgun, BB gun to the face sniper style, mace, throwing bar-bells from the 3rd floor, "panic button" on the cars in the lot, etc etc. In the end.... I don't want any enemies while I'm riding around, or anyone targeting our apartment. No one bike-jacked us while parking, and i don't want to antagonize anyone into doing that. Neighbors say the trailer was out there about the time my girl should've been leaving. I'd feel sick if something happened to her.... bikes are just bikes.

Everytime I see a stolen bike news story, or hear of a runner on the news.... I hope to see my wrecked bike laying next to the body.

Replacements:
My girl is pretty set on another SV650s. Maybe a Gladius or FZ6r (price dependent). If SV, she'll only take a full fairing bike.... unless insurance pays out enough to put fairings on the new one (technically, they should). It took months to find this one for her.

Me... I don't know what I want.
Can't stand to get ANOTHER 650r. I'd feel stupid buying all the exact same mods again... and i'll miss the powdercoated wheels..... but not gonna drop the coin AGAIN....just to have the same effin' bike.

Practical....
I'd like a naked SV, or to fighter an SV. At ~15k miles a year, the gas mileage alone and reliability is great draw. They run about $3k to $3500 depending on mileage.
Technically, I have her old red SV that was layed down. But it needs forks and an engine at minimum... and I don't really have space for a project now. nor the real no-how to swap a motor. Her plan was to part it out to offset the price of buying her now stolen bike, but we hadn't gotten to it yet.

Less practical....
I like Street Triples... but they are few and far between, even in houston. And hold value really well. Best I've found is $7500, lightly used.

The new FZ-09 looks sweet too...and for the MSRP ($7900), is competitive in price to a used street triple.... it's the dealer fees and higher insurance that may kill that deal. And waiting... I'm itching for a bike already.

I REALLY want a Buell XB, but only as a 2nd bike.... not gonna rack up the miles on one. Just don't want it as my only bike, and don't know how soon I'd buy a "commuter" after getting a buell. They range from $3200 to $6500 depending on mileage and how proud the owner is.

As of now.... just random searching and seeing what pops up.

Oh, here's her stolen SV....

and my 650r (with her old, now wrecked SV).

I fuckin' LOVED that hard cover tail-bag. Was a bitch to find and not cheap. It polished/waxed up to shine like the bike, and didn't look weathered despite being permanently bolted to the seat.

Oh, and I have all the spare body parts I bought so I could fighter the 650r.... undertail, bellypan, spare nose, windscreens, spare seat, etc.

Freekin thieves are the worse.
It sucks that you have to protect your stuff from being stolen, but it is what it is...I dunno why people don't protect their bikes. Nothing is theif-proof, but most theives are just vultures looking for easy targets. I severely doubt a couple of old bikes would be worth the punishment an violent crime would produce. With that being said: if you own your house, it can be a simple as getting one (or 3) of those manufactured home anchors and drilling them the 3-5 feet into the ground, then lock your bikes to that. There's also anchors you can bolt into concrete to lock your bike to. Bike covers can go a long way, its a less attractive target when you have to mosey around flipping a cover to see what is underneath; and they have ones with alarms. Disc locks are ok, but two dudes can pick up a bike and carry it into a trailer faster than trying to break the steering mech and roll it anyway, and I've read the alarms on them are bad about water damage. A lot of apts have covered parking, wrap a heavy duty chain through the frame and to a support beam; not just your front wheel.

Sucks your bikes got stolen, I hope the guys who stole it die in a fiery car crash and take a long time to burn. Anyone who can afford an enclosed trailor and truck obviously isn't so in need to steal.

this is why my shit is buried behind a wall of dangerous booby trapped shit. and next to my window, where I sleep, armed. Its not worth it to try. also our dogs bark, and I like to kill people. and they are blocked in by cars, and tons of trash. hahahah. just try.
I fucking hate low life retards, they should be put down like the vermin they are, but over here their human rights are worth more than the people they steal from. We need a law that says you can protect yours with the maximum force available to you, and the retards who commit the crimes have no appeal in any way whatever. If they live.
Every thing in my life I have worked fucking hard for, therefore I will fight fucking hard to keep it.

FUCKING HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH
Even over here in the land of guns. You can't shoot someone over a property crime, it sucks that you can't protect your property by shooting the varmits but you will go to prison for it.

Here in Texas, I THINK you can... if they are on your property. But not sure... I don't keep up on that stuff as I hope it never comes to it.

That's part of what's kept my mind racing... we DO have plenty of guns here.
I can't shoot them? Can I shoot their truck? Can I shoot at the empty field directly behind them? Could I put the gun away and deny it all? I'm in an apartment, so technically it's a public drive? or because it's gated it's up to property management?

Replacements...
I keep going back to either building an SV up (monster seat, custom headlight setup, short exhaust), or a street triple... a few bolt-ons and be done. Though I'd REALLY want to fork mount the gauges/light/screen to tuck them in. Practicality and money will probably put an SV in my possession, unless I come across a good deal. This time of season there really isn't much out there... I'm just scouring classified daily.
