Hello,
I`m a student and a passionate about bikes. I need your help with your opinion for a school project.
The problem that I usually have is that my helmet starts smelling after a long journey especially in the summer. I've seen that there a few helmet bags that have a small air propeller to remove the smells but the price is quite expensive for my budget. So I thought of creating a helmet drying bag, similar to a camping dry bag but shaped to fit a helmet, with a disposable inner lining made of material similar to fabric softener sheets. This inner lining will have an absorbent powder, similar to the absorbent stuff in baby diapers, which will absorb the smelly moisture from the helmet.
I'm doing a little research for a school project about this idea and I would highly appreciate your opinions about it.

Do you usually have the problem of smelly helmets? What do you do about it?
Do you think that this helmet dry bag is something that you need?
Are you currently using similar products?
What do think is a reasonable price for this bag?

Regular showers help, and you could try washing the liner. Most of my lids have removeable pads and liner. Ive never had the need to clean them in my primary helmet due to smell although they had sweat stains that I did choose to wash out. I do sometimes have issues with smelly gloves, but not helmets.

My oldest helmet (from 1997) smells like rubber and plastic, just like a new helmet.

If my helmet gets sweaty, it might smell a little like shampoo, but that's it.

Sounds like you have a hygeine problem. Unless you put a sweaty helmet in a sealed bag and left it in there for a while - but who would do that to an expensive piece of equipment?

A helmet bag with a ventilation system isn't a bad idea. Don't know if it would sell much, but you never know without trying. I don't need one, though. I don't use the helmet bags I have now.

yea i dont have this problem either i just went and smelled my helmet to make sure... no stink. why would u need a helmet bag that has a ventilation system in it? just take it out the bag BAM ventilated.

like smoker said i dont know if its a good idea dude, not to sounds like a dick but u might wanna go back to the drawing boards. its not that u cant this actually work, but it just dont seem practical to me. sounds like if u have a smelly helmet then that person needs to wash more and just pull the lining out the helmet and wash that. put more thought in bro

dryer sheets are good to throw in your helmet to keep it smelling nice while its not in use

um yeh dooder hate to say it but Grunge Died in April of 1994 sorry broseph... take showers often... unless of course you rock dreads...then umm yout fucked cuz you cant effectively wash em... :run: by chance you wernt teh Stinky one in third grade were you... the lil kid that always has scent de cat peese... all dirt ball jokes aside try a sock full of baking soda tied in a knot and wash zee liner twice a month or more if you ride more

Most modern helmets have kickass ventilation.

I have some older mx helmets that dont vent well, but even after a long riding weekend, they dont really smell that bad. Putting your lid in a bag is prob the reason it's smelling.


Can't say i recommend it for a school project if the real solution is dont put something wet in a bag and expect it not to smell.

Both of mine and all of my caps smell sorta like my shampoo. I like that smell. LOL

I gotta agree with all these guys. Take a friggin shower if your helmet start smelling after a "long" day of riding. I rode for over 8 hours a few times this past summer without once having an issue. I know guys on here ride for 8 hours a day several days in a row and doubt theirs smell.

and if your liner isn't removable, a cloth bag or a sock with some dry white rice will absorb any residual moisture left over, and then a dryer sheet will freshen it back up.

I put a dryer sheet in mine when I let it sit for a while, wash the liner about once a onth when I'm riding regularly.

thanx for concurring on the "effective" part up2l8 ... ive wanted dreads since 1998 and i have yet to rockem cuz i dont play soccer anymore and im really into this pocess that u take a chemical and put it in your hair scrub it around, rinse and repeat as necessary i repeat often cuz of ocd and with my research ive concluded u cant really clean dreads all the way...but one day ill get over the fear and re live the early 90's

GSF is right, his use of the word "effective" was correct in context in that due to the compaction of fiber, even the best of shampoos won't even deliver an "adequate" cleaning of the hair when it is in TRUE dreadlock style. 1stBelAirFighter is also correct in that he can manage to find the definition of a word but can't manage to determine it's use in the context of a sentence any more than a common chimp.
