Yeah, that's really a good one to start with. You could also look to pick up something older to work on and get to understand what skills you need to have to do things to your bike. I would probably just look for a good deal on something older that you at least somewhat like. Learn to ride it, fix it, and mod it. Then when your ready to you can get a real project.
cbr600's are really easy to come by and the are super cheap, but youre looking at a lot of work to make them sick, cause there really stupid looking stock. you could pick up a cbr600f3 in really nice cond for $3k or less. GSXR's are a better platform they're really easy to find for cheap as well.
