Newbie here. I just brought an old school 86 ninja 600R that was practically under water. Now that I road it for a couple of days i am going to spend the winter turning it into a "Custom Fighter". I will post the before, during and after as i go.

My biggest question right now is: What is my best option for installing a wider swing arm on that frame so i can mount a fatter tire on it?

Please don't tell me to get another bike. I am determined to turn this into something worthy to be on this site and for me ride with my special lady friend.

This is challenging because this old ninja doesn't seem to be customized often and i cant find many references.

Any help here will be greatly appreciated.

First off: CF will never tell you to get another bike. We hack together 35 year old 100cc imports.

Second: I have the factory manual for your bike (I have a 1990 Ninja) best $35 I ever spent on the bike, period.

Third: Measure, measure, measure and remember that you can always machine stuff to fit

For inspiration you can look around at other guys with zx600 and zx500, they have similar frames and lines

I have a similar issue as the OP, although mine is for a 87 750r, similar beasts in nature.

In addition to this mod, beside swapping, are extensions an option for these aged bikes?

you can do anything you want you can put a wider tire on but your not going to be able to get much more the 2 sizes bigger with out huge problems not saying it cant be dont cause it can. then if you do change the rear to a bigger tire. i would also go bigger in the front 2

im just saying if you go bigger you may run in to the problem of lining up the sprockets with the tire being in the way

Measure and cross your fingers. Stock is a 130 on the lil ol ZX, and i got a 160 on it, and I could fit a 170 if I wanted to. Sprockets line up perfectly...everything is perfect.

I put a zx600e rear swingarm in my zx600c/r.....I just ground away 1/8" on each side of the frame, made bushings and pretty much said viola... it now runs a 160 tire.
Do you happen to remember what diameter the pivot bolt was on the ZX600C? Was it the same as the ZX600E or did you have to drill the frame?

I found the dimensions of the ZX600C. Looks like the swingarm pivot sleeve is 17.1MM x 25mm x 230MM. So that gives you some options for an easy swap. I'll have to take a look a what I have kicking around at home. See what might be close to start.

Thanks,

Bob

I just bought a 89 Ninja 600 c2 version and I am trying to make plans for the swing arm. Did you find an answer for a bigger swing arm?

How big was that rear tire? I read somewhere on custom fighter that you can fit a 170 on stock for our bike.

it was a 160 rear... if the wheel was pushed forward in the swinger the tire was touching the outside of the swing arm. i suppose you could not push the wheel the entire way forward but i would rather just be sure you know?
i was toying with machining the part away as i think its only a brace section but i wasn't sure so i left it... i will try to get a pic.
