So, yeah, picked up a 1981 GS450 to turn into a bobber. Had the motivation to do it after I converted one of my old customers' honda cb650's into a bobber ( http://www.customfighters.com/forums/showthread.php?t=13597&highlight=madmaxmobilebobber )

But, yeah, the old lady wanted something we could mob around town on together (3 fighters, all solo seats)....so, Im tearing into this one this weekend to start...

The guy who owned it before me did some SUPERSHITTY work to attempt a chopper look....really scary shit, so I went down to the local wrecking yard and got me a donor frame to modify for tank, seating and hardtail purposes...

I went the cheap and easy way on the madmax bobber because it wasnt mine, so I want to do it the right way on this one...

heres some pics of how it was (still is) when i bought it:

heres some pics of the shitass scary work they did to bob it:

and another pic representing the lovely wiring job they did (lucky I have an intact harness on the donor):

Here's a pic of the donor frame (kinda hard to see, i know):

here's what Ive done so far:
Removed the center support bar, so I can line up and weld a new straight downtube support and gusset from the stem to the downtubes (the tubing I'm using is from my old band's van racking...VERY STURDY...rust is only surface rust, btw....once everything is welded and done, it goes in to be blasted and powdercoated)

And the sweet peanut tank that came with it (needs to be dipped for internal rust still, and resealed)

oh, and my super score for the week, my RX8 I picked up for $60!!!

All in all, I'm into the bike $410 (260 for the running motor, and 150 for the good frame)

sounds like a good plan waiting for the DW is the helmet painted black or is it a black helmet?

painted black...it was white when i got it...so, i wetsanded it to dull, primed it and painted it
Ah man looks like fun! Those guys freakin butchered that frame though, suprised the steering stem didn't snap off while they were cornering...nice tank. My bro got one of those for my dads XS chopper project.
yeah...i dont even know if they actually rode it...lol...i do know it runs tho! thats awesome!

ive already ground down the welds from the stock center tube and mold gusset, and prepped the new downtube for welding...now its a matter if stabilizing the downtube so i CAN weld it...without some one to hold it in place for me, its difficult to get it straight and in line with the two side tubes, so it clears the engine and carbs...
Almost finished with the base of the frame...just a couple more welds to do and she's done, then I can paint the engine and throw her back in, bolt her up, throw the harness back on and wire it all up....

any ideas on bars? definitely wanna do a riser situation....but it may have to wait a lil while...atleast until january, when my fin. aid comes in...

ill post pics tomorrow...shes almost a roller right now...had to fab about 75% of the frame to get it how I wanted it...

anyways, you'll see what i mean...tomorrow.
reminds me of going to the doctor and then when you expect stitches he pulls out electrical tape on it.

i blame craigslist already. i sure hope he was just using the tape to hold it on there. i am kind of curious if he rode it like so, i don't think anyone is that stupid though. oh well least you got a running motor/parts outta it.
if i remember right, the guy i bought it off of actually said he rode it about a mile or so out and back to his place...sometimes, even a horrible weld placement job can hold...its scary...
Where are the pics bitch?
C'mon Sicky pics !
The moded frame:wtf: Is a fookin abortion ...Didja kick himin the balls after yew paid tha fucker ?
lol...had to go another route as far as the struts coming down from the top due to some misalignment when welding..., but ill get some pics up.
More! More!
More! More!
Im welding her up today, so pics should (should...mind you) be up later today...

impatient lil buggers...

Yeah... I concur with everyone else... WE NEED THE PICS!!! I am doing somthing simular. I bought a 1979 yamaha xs400 for my wife. Started chopping it as soon as I got it home... Then the wife said I could either spend money on it or on my fighter... My fighter is getting finished first... Then back on to her bike...

so, here's where it sits as of now....Im getting ready to cut and set up the lower braces for the rear part of the frame, but this is how she is right now....its hard to make it out with lack of contrast (everything is bikes in my garage for the most part)

now im off to cut and grind more metal...:)

Hey, he does know how to use a camera! What are your plans for the rest of the frame?
Putting support rails from the undercarriage to the adjuster brackets, and then gussets and supports throughout.
