Re: eatabullet's '05 katana gsx600f

taking a break to do some laundry, here's what i've been doing so far.

chopped an inch off the bottom to let the whole thing sit lower.
Image

Image

i'm going to have to do something with the subframe...probably turn the end up to follow the seat.

also made a little mount for the tank out of 3/4" square
Image

i also took 1/4" out of the back and bent it together, then welded and sanded a bit
Image

and this is why i took that 1/4" out the back
Image

with a gap still for the mounting hardware
Image

still to do today:
fish plates over the splay cuts or more curving of the subby, to follow the seat up.

quick budget numbers:
bike - $2500 (back in 09)

steel - hell i'd have to guess. $100, that sounds good.
moty battery - $60
cbr1000rr seat - $15 on ebay
motor - $250
carbs - $500 i think i'm going to need new stacks, so another $70 fer those.
so far $935 on top of the bike cost

gas - $350. and rising. sucks having to drive about 200 miles each weekend to work on it. bout $50 in gas each weekend.

Image

this one is going on the inside, the outsides will have a better pattern to the rosettes.

then i stopped to weld up a second engine stand, so i could pull the clutch cover
Image

i'm cleaning the cover, b/c monday it's getting shipped to sebspeed for some clear cover awesome-ness

and the guy i bought the mik's from, also gave me these:

a set of incomplete polished bodies for mikuni flatslides. when i have more time, i'm thinking of making desk lamps out of them.

i have a conversion bearing on the way, and i still have to swap bearing races. but if it doesn't work out, i may have to swap stems.

sometimes being add can get you into trouble...

Re: eatabullet's '05 katana gsx600f

So i have this week off work. Been dw.

Welded the crack in my duke frame, and now have a roadworthy bike.
Image

Also swapped upper races on the kat, and fitted the r1 front end, still need to mess with steering stops.
Now i'm working on the dirty bars.
Prepped the upper, and put wood dowels in the holes i drilled.
Image

Then mixed a bit of jb weld and filled in the webbing
Image

And with a few minutes and a bench grinder, i now have shorter bolts for the risers:
Image

The bolt from the driven risers is on the right. Way too long.

Re: eatabullet's '05 katana gsx600f

Okay folks, need some opinions here. I want to brace the subframe usig one of or a combo of the three options below:
Pic of motor in bike:
Image

1. Over the carb stacks if i can fit it:
Image

2. Little piece at the base of the subby:
Image

3. Piece mounted below the subby:

4. Hmm i likes this one:

GIVE ME OPINIONS pleeze (in the discussion thread ;))

Re: eatabullet's '05 katana gsx600f

Also decided to use the cbr seat after all. Once i put the motor in, i'm almost flat foot on the ground with the cbr seat, so i made a mount, turned out meh, cause i f'd up a cut and had to redo a section. But it works, and will be hidden.

Seat is nice and snug against the tank. And so are my balls when i'm on it haha.

Someday i'll get around to blending the tank to match the frame and seat but not during this buildoff. Now to see if i can reuse the old kat seat latch and fab a new set of pins for the cbr seat.

Re: eatabullet's '05 katana gsx600f

Ok it literally took a half hour to do this:

Old kat seat parts, ground some material off the latch, drilled some larger holes to fit the latch pins around the cbr seat bumpers:
Image

Then cut the old latch mount off the kat frame, sized to fit in the new subframe, put it all in and tacked in place:
Image

Easiest fukn part of the build so far!!
Now i'm off to buy an energy drink and pack of smokes.

Re: eatabullet's '05 katana gsx600f

Exhaust options, hmmmmm

So much for an underbody exhaust. I really don't feel like putting that effort in. Yet. Besides if i find a cheap bandit 1200 motor down the road, i'm just going to turbo it.

Also i'm kind stuck on tails. Do i go german, esp w/the first two exhaust options. Should i bob it? Fighter tail? Bobbed fighter tail? Aargh!

Re: eatabullet's '05 katana gsx600f

some additional photo's i took over the weekend, didn't work on it saturday or sunday. i'll try and get more done this weekend, but i'm running out of time for this build. upcoming work and vaca means i have until april 12th to finish...don't think i'm going to make it. still need a tail, lighting, paint, brakelines, throttle cables, then the final assembly and tuning.
shucks, wish i woulda been able to start sooner. oh well, gave it hell, guess i'll have to finish it next year, maybe take it with me too marquette, and wrench in my down time (probably be working 6-10's for the rest of the year) and enter in a fotm. it's been fun though.
:edit: also need to sand a shit ton of weld down, and sand all the flux spatter off the subby (i'm going to have to switch to a gas setup soon), and i need a new front wheel, and new rubber. but once i get this pig running and tuned, ima burn the old tire off the rim :evilred:

Re: eatabullet's '05 katana gsx600f

Didn't work on it at all yesterday, Lack of motivation plus hangover. Did a bit of shaping this morning. I like the right side if the tail (took too much material off the left side). Next will be lots of body filler and more shaping to finish the plug.
