I have started shedding weight from the bike and i need some help on what to do with my guage cluster. cheap is good, effective is best. 01 Ninja 250. I think i am going to change to a standard chopper type conical headlight and dont want to run a huge bugshield. Im thinking minimalistic but still enough to keep things covered because i do ride in rain and leave the bike in parking lots during said rain. Def want to keep a cluster so i know my speed. Other guages are not nearly as important to me. rpms can be guessed by sound, neutral can be found, blinky can be seen by blinkies...its just that stinkin speedo that i need.

Koso makes a variety of compact digital clusters. Trail Tech also has a couple off-road oriented bike computers, show tach, speed, distance, and engine temp or something. You can also get dial style speedometers that read off GPS as well, though they're not cheap.

If you have a smartphone you can get speed off it for free, but it'll run your battery down really fast. It'll also be invisible in bright daylight, and you have to find a way to securely mount it. I wouldn't trust the flimsy car windshield mounts in the wind at 100mph to hold a $600 phone. Not a very practical solution IMO.

If I'm not mistaken it is LEGAL to run without one...in my state at least. If you're commuting just keep up with traffic and you'll be fine. That'll allow you to still ride while you save up money for a GPS oriented device or think of a mounting idea for the stock cluster. At the same rate, thinking about resale... be prepared for folks getting pissy about unknown mileage :D
