Hey guys, I was finally able to find a bike that I can build into a streetfighter. I just picked up a 96 yzf600r for $750 and it rides great. However, It needs alot of cosmetic work and a few essential parts. So i have a few questions and any help or suggestions would be great.

I eventually want to turn this into a major project and am willing to dump some cash into it. However, i just started school and just need to get it street legal for now as cheap as possible.

1) Headlight - I dont have one and have to figure something out, I have been looking at the Acerbis lights but have seen some bad reviews on their brightness. any suggestions for a cheap good headlight.

2) i need mirrors but am having a tough time finding some that wont look like their stuck way too far out

3) I need gauges. i dont have to have a tach, but wouldn't mind one if cheap enough. However, I do need a speedo for sure and need to find the cheapest possible speedometer setup available for now.

4) The first major upgrade I am going to do is a tail swap from one of the newer r6's, anyone seen a thread about this swap? Or any other suggestions as far as future mods. I am going to get it all powdercoated black black and paint the tank and tail gloss black with a subtle dark grey tribal pattern.

Thanks

Here are a couple pics,

headlight: you can get good light out of a universal 7in headlight for cheaper than an acrebis

gauges: cheapest alternative is the push bike magnetic speedo driven off the front wheel, best bang for your buck gauges are the veypour gauges

tail: R6 tail as doable and has been done a few times on the yzf600rr forums check them out aswell for some styling ideas

mirrors: any barend mounted mirrors will do the job, also consider the under arm dirtbike orientated mirrors that mount before the grips and look under your arm, these arn't so good with clip ons though.

paint: sounds good like the subtle trible look your going for

exhaust: any modern or old R6 exhaust will fit the yzf600 (I got an 07R6 hotbodies slash cut megaphone on my yzf600)

where are you located and how tough is your inspection there?

I really like my crg blindspot mirror.

gauges, ebay look for stock gauges, cheapest and easiest route probably.

Tail swap will be a lot of work on that bike. your subframe is huge and its welded to the main frame. Ive always like that body style yzf600/750(i know they are different).

First thing i would do on that bike is get rid of those ugly cruiser grips :)

welcome aboard

Thanks for the help. I live in Florida and I dont think that we have any kind of inspection, at least I have never had to get anything inspected.

Ordered some of those crg mirrors this morning, that is just what I was looking for.

Still not sure about the headlight though...... dont want to waste money on a bad light.

I guess I am going to save a little and get those veypor gauges, they look like a great deal.

Thanks for the info guys.

Bar end mirrors are a good call. My buddy built his mirror on his chopper that mounts before the grip. He used some metal rod a bmx brake lever and a 1.5in by 1.5in square dice that he glued a piece of mirror to and it looks pretty official you may just try making something custom to suit what you have and a low budget for the moment.

also IMO I feel like tribal paint comes standard on most of the newer stock street bikes and it may take away from the potential amazing out come of your build just my .02

Either way good luck and have fun with it!

maybe a two tone with a stripe like gloss black and a dark grey with some flat black stripes or if you want a subtle color scheme but nothing crazy maybe some colored stripes to match say some levers and rim strips.

or hit up the tribal thing and tell me to fuck off haha

some of my ideas are product of my friends suggestions is all.

I'm looking forward to following this project
