Start from the beginning. You should(on most bikes) have a common ground that connects to both headlights, then a high and low beam wire. When you hit the high/low switch it will switch the power between these two wires. On bulbs with a high/low beam together you will have 3 wires going to the bulb, ground, high, low.

You need to break out the voltmeter and start checking power and ground and go from there.

okay to get the headlights working i used brown as the hot and yellow and black as the ground (got this off a thread on here) which got both lights working .....

as shown here

now this is where i am getting confused bearing in mind i am a mechanic not a sparky

the wires coming from the dimmer switch is black red, yellow red and blue and yellow :vshock:

as shown in this picture

bearing in mind the headlights have two wires out of each headlight .... so i have the common ground for the normal lights and a hot wire but no matter what i do i can't get main beam on so PLEASE LADS help me out lol i need this for a mot .... i am free all day and i am working to finish the bike today so if you need more pics or any further info just as ......

I'm about to hit the sack here so I'll make this quick...

Firstly do you have a repair manual for your bike? If your answer is no...Get one!
Here is an online wiring diagram:
Image

That shows that the red/yellow wire is your Low and the red/black wire is your High....

Secondly, what is the mask you bought and what bulbs does it use? Is it using single filament (H1, H3 etc) or dual filament (H4)? Secondary to that question is, what wattage are the bulbs?

Thirdly, why are you using the brown wire for your lights?
The wires coming from your switch to the headlight (red/yellow & red/black) would not suddenly turn into one single brown wire. The blue/yellow wire at your switch block is the feed wire to your switch, forget all about that wire and don't touch it.
What you want is the red/yellow wire and red/black wire. Trace those wires all the way from the switch to where the headlight is and there you have your wires. As I said (going from the diagram) red/yellow is your Low and red/black is your High....

I'm crashing out now so I'll check back when I can tomorrow... Good luck!

OK COOL.... i used the wires that were outlined in a thread off here for the same year bike and that was how they wired the headlights up i will give your advice ago tonight and see how it comes up .... thanks for your help i am good a mechanics but when it comes to wiring i am a complete noob

i will try this and await a post to see results

ok i have had a look ... i understand the red/yellow is low and red/black is high .... but i still need a ground and a hot wire .... i used the brown as a hot and the black/yellow as a ground ... i can get the lights to come on low beam with the black and yellow but i can't get the high beam to come on with using either the red/yellow or red/black .... i do have a manual and the diagram is slightly different to the one you have as mine is the uk model and that is for the us ......

the headlight unit i am using is the VERTICA FAIRING and is fitted with 12v 20watt bulbs and i am trying to find out if they are h1 h3 bulbs ....

here is the ebay link so you can see the fairing and some info ...

again thanks lads for trying to help me out i really appreciate it as i am a dumbass when it comes to wiring

hope this is all the info needed if not REPLY and i will fill in any gaps if need be

first, dont ride at night with those lights PLZ.

Second if your wiring a single filament one bulb will have to be the low beam, and another bulb will have to be the low beam. Get the high beam wired to the top light, and low beam wired into the lower light, then just play with the high lo beam switch and get it sat right in the middle both lights will light up then.

ok cool will do that once i have some solid wiring advice will give it a shot later today and whats the concerns about riding at night??? dont tell me i have purchased a shit headlight mask????

I can tell you that you haven't bought a shit headlight...or I can tell you the truth :D
:LolLolLolLol:
Your new light most likely uses the bulb that is found in kitchen downlights. Nothing wrong with that in itself, they are commonly used as auxillary lights.... but you are going from 110w stock to 40w with your new mask.... I would not ride with that at night bud...

Now as for your wiring, I'm going to get straight to the point here. Those red/yellow & red/black wires ARE your hot wires. I don't know what that brown wire is from but DO NOT use it. It is NOT part of your headlight circuit.

Now your new headlight poses an additional dilemma...
Your stock headlight setup uses 2 dual filament bulbs. This means that each bulb had both a High & Low inside it.
Your new headlight uses 2 single filament bulbs. This means that each bulb has only one function, ie there is no High & Low, it can only be used as one or the other.....
Here lies the problem. Your stock Low wire has no power when you flick your switch to High, and vice versa... You can't just wire one of the new bulbs to the Low wire & one to the High because you will still only have one bulb on at either switch setting.
To have the functionality of a Low/High, you need to use a relay. Now you can use 2 relays, one for each of the bulbs on your new light...or you can use 1 relay to power the bulb you want to use for Low, and use your stock High wiring to power the other bulb.
I'll only outline using one relay for you here. There is a thread on this here:
http://www.customfighters.com/forums/showthread.php?t=48236
This is for if you want to use one relay:
Image

So for the above setup, terminal 87 goes to the +ve wire of the bottom light on your new mask (assuming you wish to use the bottom for Low).
Terminal 85 goes to the blue/yellow wire heading into your switch.
Terminal 30 goes to the +ve side of the battery and terminal 86 goes to the -ve side of the battery or an existing -ve wire.
The red/yellow wire goes unused and the red/black wire goes to the +ve wire of the top light on your new mask (assuming you wish to use the top light for High).
The -ve wires from both new lights in your mask go to the stock -ve headlight wire or -ve battery terminal.

Of course you could get away without using a relay. Your new mask uses well under what your old setup used so you will be perfectly safe to not use a relay. I do reccomend using a relay though as you can go on to upgrade to a better headlight at some stage without having to rewire....
To wire your headlight without a relay simply choose a light on your new mask that you want to use for Low, take the +ve wire from it and wire that into the blue/yellow wire that goes into your switch block.
Now take the +ve wire from the other light and wire that to the red/black wire coming from your switch.
The -ve wires from both lights go to the existing -ve headlight wire or to the battery terminal....

I hope this has helped.
