Looking great bro!

About the noise....does it happen when just pushing the bike, engine off?
Not that I can tell. Actually, the last time I had it on a stand, I spun the wheel and couldn't replicate the sound. It doesn't seem like it starts until the bike's got a little speed upj- 5mph+ or so?

Here's what I know for sure:

1. The sound does not happen in neutral- no matter what the rpm.
2. When in gear, it doesn't show up until about the middle of 1st gear
3. The rate of the noise is not the same as the rate of wheel spin. It is a cyclic sound but it's at a lower speed than wheel spin.

oh yeah.....

should mention also that she has REALLY cheap oil in her right now. Going to be changing that this week.

She'd been sitting for a few months (maybe longer) when I got her and I just wanted to put some fresh stuff in there to run briefly and start to break loose some of the gunk. Planning to get that oil nice and hot, drain and replace with synth blend in a few days.

hooray, video!

You can hear the sound I'm talking about at about 0:11 and again at 1:24 or so. Once the rpm gets up, the pipes drown it out.
I wanna say that it sounds like it's coming from the left side, down low but I'm not sure. Told the wife I want someone to ride it and drag me along side on a creeper or my skateboard so I can listen for it:thumbsup:
Toward the end, the wind started to mess with the camera's noise canceling and the audio sucks but, whatever.

don't laugh at me too hard. Kept checking to make sure I was still in the frame- camera was on the tripod in the back seat of my car:nuts:
was the best I could do at the time.....

Chain not tight enough and bouncing on the swingarm protector?
That's a good point and I HOPE that it's that simple. Gonna tighten it a bit when I work on my wheel spacers. We'll see

clack-clack sound fixed

So, the rear wheel is not as out of alignment as I had orginally thought. The noise in the video was the clip side of the master link whacking the frame as it went by. The chain runs very close to the frame and the clip side of that master link is about 3mm 'wider' than the rivet side. SO, I flipped the master link so that the clip was on the inside of the chain and took the excess slack out and, voila! No more noise........

Finished up some of my bracketry- upper headlight mount, tail light mounts and a bracket for my cdi box. Now I need to finish my tail. Think I'm gonna use some heavy gauge extruded sheet metal to make a 'cage' that will fit over the tail light.

AND, I'm probably not nearly as clever as I sometimes think but I made a short video after dinner the other night and it makes me laugh so I thought I'd share it

i like it brotha good work...i really need to jump on mine!
Thanks man.

You do need to get to work. I wanna see all that fab work you're planning turn into a killer bike.

yes sir. lots of work. i need to do work. plannin on doing some work this weekend, only thing really holding me back is cash flow. i need a fuel cell made to fit under the new tank. then the rest of the frame is all down hill. after that its just the front end and swingarm really. small shit after everything.

Good news and bad news..........

SO, Dremel, Radio Shack and I had a late night after I got home from class last night and the result was a new-to-me set of gauges!

Picked up speedo/tach/temp gauge with bracket from a 95 zx7 for $20 shipped. Modded/cleaned and painted the bracket and added a red LED (looks orange in the pic) for my engine light and green for my neutral indicator- all the other dummy lights were deleted. Everything works and I'm happy. It's not as sleek a solution as I originally had in mind and it takes away from my little fairing a bit but it ain't bad

AND...

I learned today about 'wasted spark' ignitions and that my bike has one. SO, the ZX's tach is probably looking for spark on every other stroke where my bike fires both plugs every time. So my rpm is doubled and since the the tach bottoms out at 15k, I don't have any engine speed info after 7500 RPM. Oh well. Once I have the speedometer cable that I need, the tach is leaving in favor of the speedometer.

Updates and need for some input

...pics to come tomorrow

So, cold as it may have been, took her out for a short run last night. Good that I did 'cause I found some things out.

1. My headlight (which I hadn't really paid attention to since I mounted it) was aimed so high that every time I went under some overhanging tree limbs, it lit up the branches:LolLolLolLol:

2. After two oil changes now I had never notice that the o-ring's missing from my filler cap. Pulled into a gas station after a few minutes to look things over and found a dribble of oil down the case cover. oops.

3. That exhaust is LOUD, man. whoa. I really might have to seek out some packing and stuff 'em a little bit to take the edge off.

4. My rear wheel is still not just exactly right. This is where I need some input. The noise of the chain slapping the frame returns on occasion, albeit FAR lighter (more of tick than the WHACK that existed before) and less frequent (pretty much only on hard decel). Closer re-inspection reveals that I still need to take the wheel about another 2mm to the brake side in order for the chain to run straight and not brush the frame.
Here's my question. As it sits now the right side of the tire will rub one of the welds on the swinger if I move it over 2mm now. It's really just the end of that weld (will post a pic tonight) and, if I just run it until the chain stretches a bit I should be able to 'miss' that weld with a chain adjustment and this would allow for the 2mil distance that I need to straighten my chain.
What's the general consensus here about running a slightly misaligned chain for a little while?

Thanks again guys!

I say no to running a misaligned chain. Doing one thing wrong to compensate for another thing that's wrong just strikes me as a bad idea. Can you grind down the weld that is in the way to get your clearance?

Yeah.......... can grind it down some. Enough? Maybe. maybe not. Thing is I cut a longer chain than stock to allow for this whole problem BUT.....

I evidently mis-measured and didn't get it quite far enough back. I do have a second master link. What about using that to add a link back in? I'm just almost as paranoid about grinding welds on my swinger as I am about running a chain that's slightly out.

If you can use the extra master to add in 2 extra links then at the very least you can see if that solves your problem. Then if it does you can buy a new chain and cut accordingly if you are worried.

Seems safer than running a chain out of alignment, knowing that it will shorten the lifespan in an unpredictable manner.

Hopefully working on my wheel spacers tomorrow. We'll see where she lands in terms of clearing the butt-end of that swingarm weld and just play it by ear. If I have to grind it down a bit............. it's just the very end of the weld so it shouldn't be a problem and should be minimal grinding. Might even be able to just file it a bit and get what I need. My Z needs a new rear shock and I won't have the $$ for that til next month so I need my li'l Zero to get straight.
