I have a 1984 Nighthawk 650 shafty.....I have had the bike for a few months now and just got my last ride in today. Decided it was time to start tearing it apart. i posted a couple thread of it before but were in the wrong section, so im doin it in the right spot now.

Here is how she was when i got the bike

After about 2 days into owning the bike i heard a nasty noise from the engine, turns out it ate one of the crank shaft bearings and i started saving up money to get the parts, got a new crank/rods/bearing.....well mostly new, they had about 4k miles on them...and i started getting swamped at work so i had no time to work on it. I took it to a shop to do the labor cause i was just gettin frustrated looking at the bike. Couple weeks later they had the bike done and gave me a $788.Fuck Me!!!!! I would have just done it myself they quoted it around $400. But it has been doin great since.
here was how i found out it was a bearing

I laid the bike down in the fall due to my own stupidity but i had all my gear on and only have minor rash from layin it down, The bike was pretty good except the handle bars were efffed and couple scratches here and there and a busted headlight, I put a couple cheapo autozone fog light on it and the actually gave me better visability than stock

Today i started taking all body related pieces off, tank, guages, seat, tail in about an hour and the only electrical problem i am having is my blinkers arent working, But I have no idea where to go with the bike, a cafe would be nice but im 6'4" and dont want to be cramped, I want a 919 or cb600f tank on the bike and started tossin around the idea doin a bobbed style seat with a z100 steat, but i would be raising the seat height also

The black tape helped the bars fit in nice and tight haha.
no reason it say south Africa. Bought it with that on it and it happened to be center. Clip ons will also be one of my additions.. more updates tomorrow. I plan on tracking down where my blinkers got messed up then hack the subby up

I have some pics on Photobucket. When I get home I will post them up for ya. It was pretty simple. And they hardly drained the battery. I amlucky cause I have never had much trouble with the electronics on the bike but it has died at a gas station once

i just used crimps with solder in em and use heat shrink tubing to seal it in

I had both grounds goin to the single original ground and stripped the high and lo beam wires, lo beam to the low light and high beam to the higher up one, Had both on at a time at first but didnt want to ask to much of the nhawk cause of the shotty charging system
Image

be warned the original wiring is a bit of a clusterfuck i took out about half the wiring by cutting out unneccesary lenght and then solder the wires back together

Well I post up some pics of what I vision in my mind. So I will do a couple sketches tonight cause its not gonna be a typical fighter set up the tail will be more cafe style than sporty. Besides I have to much in the bike now to bring it back to stock and sell it for a loss of 2grand. So idgaf about selling it and am gonna make it "my" bike

Uf those are some good inspiration for my build!!! I wish I had a 700s. But I am thinking about possibly changing the tank.
Progress today. I got a new flasher relay and fuses. And my blinked will turn on now but won't flash.
Cheers hybridion:shocker:

I dont remember where i read they had 80hp, dang.... googled again and could only find them at 63hp, thanks endo, im considering fabbing up my own air box with a high flow cone filter, but from what i heard from nighthawk guys is these bikes are difficult to rejet

ok, so a little progress on the blinkers, got a new flasher and fuses yesterday and now the blinkers will turn on but still wont flash, they just give a dim glow, im also looking for a wiring diagram for my stock gauge set up so i can use the connections and wire in the new setup to fit perfectly.
This is the best diagram i have found so far http://www.myhonda650.com/images/cb650wiring.jpg but it doesnt show anything for the gauge pin setup at all

I checked out a few today, thanks that will help me. I went out to the garage to grab a couple beers and saw the bike just sitting there and had to do more work on it, so... i decided to take the shocks off
Image

and clean em up, i want the bike to have a higher stance also, in the rear, so if i were to get a solid piece of aluminum or dog bones could i mount the bottom of the shock where it is in the pic^ with out any problems from the shaft drive? Also the other shock bolt was hiding behind one of the mufflers so..............i decided to take off the exhause and clean it up soon, and hopefully get some new muff on it before i have to reinstall it

here they are cleaned up and sanded

Thanks man, ur kz650-pre fl1100 motor gave me a little inspiration when i first signed up here, now i have seen too much on here and need to get a direction to take this thing. Hahaha, but once i fine tune my 0 amount of welding skills it will have a custom fabbed tail and fairing that mount on the motor and some "spare" bolts in the frame(wtf??) i have no idea what was mounted there before i got the bike

One thing ya need to learn about welding.

Scuff the weld area before you light it up. Grind it make sure that rust is gone, it's clean as can be, and it's free of oils.

Makes a huge difference.

As for your practice welds. Try and get a little more penetration turn up the heat and turn down the wire speed. Also slow down on your travel speed. Drag the gun from point A to B

like so( < = direction of wire/gun/shielding gas)

A<<<<<<<<B

also hold the gun at a 45 degree angle away from the weld
Image

when starting out hesitate a bit before moving across.

a steady hand and even travel speed can go a long way.

NICE job on the shocks

Thanks that advice will help a TON !!!!!!! :shocker:
I got some better welds after these but i went alot slower and got them to pool better but i stayed to long in one spot and burned thru a few times hopefully i get alot better by the end of this comin week and the dont look like chickenshit anymore

it will come with time. Everyone sets up the machine and moves the gun differently

Start with a base line and fine tune it from there.

I usually like to go a tad higher wire speed than voltage. For example: dial set to 4 on Voltage and 4.25-4.5 on Wire Speed.

different on every machine. I use a millermatic 210 and 140

I use a harbor freight 90 amp flux core...... My current settings are min and max  my dad got it for me as a last minute bday present cause i have been wanting to learn, hopefully get a nice welder in a couple months
