Haven't updated in a while...just been driving the bike...

But today I have a pretty exciting update (or at least for me).

Just picked this up this R1 front end this evening. Planning to do the swap onto my bike in the near future since my forks are leaking and my brakes are really bad. Owner was parting out his bike and was nice enough to throw in 2 fenders as well as some brand new brake pads he had lying around! :D

It's going to be interesting to see how the lower height pans out. These older honda's have some MX bike long ass'ed forks on them.

Could get close when it come to that front cylinder and radiator.

Do work, and make it happen boss man :D

 That's the plan buddy.

You're right about the forks on these bikes being really long (~33" compared to 29.25" of the R1's). I'm planning on making some fork extenders for the R1 forks, and then probably lowering the bike 1 or 2 inches at the same time just to see how it feels.

At least one guy has BTDT with the shorter fork swap. You may find that the R1 forks just aren't long enough. I've been playing with geometry to get the front end down and there's only so far you can go and still maintain suspension travel. That bulky engine design really eats up a lot of space that the front tire would otherwise like to occupy.

I can't see that thread for some reason.

The forks definitely aren't long enough...by about 3 inches. I don't see why some simple fork extenders won't work...I took apart one fork this morning and it looks like it will work fine. The full travel of these shocks will be retained...Will that be enough for my bike? I don't know yet...I'm gonna get it mocked up and then see how it works. Springs might need to be changed.

I will be making them myself...the only thing I'll have to get done is the metric threads (don't have metric gears for my lathe).

Maybe don't look for sport bike front ends. Look for front ends of other cruisers, bit modern ones.

Yamaha's Mean Streak had nice looking USD forks with some mister brakes on it. Picking from a cruiser is gonna cure your fork leg issues.
I picked up this whole setup for $375...I doubt I'll ever find a longer/newer set for that kinda price. I'm still in this build for under $1000 (including buying the bike) and I'd like to keep it around that.

Crud, I forgot that you have to actually be logged in to access anything significant on that forum. Might be worth joining just to read things like that. Be aware that they do not accept free email addresses when you sign up, and will block your IP if you try. Kind of a hassle and a pretty outdated policy. I don't know anyone under retirement age who uses the email address provided by their ISP rather than a free web-based account.

Anyway, I'll go back to the cheap seats and see what you come up with on the forks you have. Good luck!

I may steal that design, my pvc fork compressor home made rig is... well close to being deadly...

:D

Cool! I can get you some more pics if you'd like. Just need a tube some threaded rod, some nuts and a few small plates. Oh and a welder of course...

Well after the whole weekend messing around with the levers, I can positively say that they're pieces of crap.

Got them on, started to bleed them and the reservoirs started to leak at the bottom. Took the all apart and found that the o-rings were damaged on both of them. Then tried for hours to bleed the brake side and I still couldn't get any pressure out of the brake lever. They were working slightly but it's like it wasn't enough for it to push the brakes all the way.

I have a feeling them being 17mm bore and the stock ones being 14mm bore is potentially a cause for this.

On another note, my dad made me some brackets to mount the headlight lower than stock, so that worked well. Just a quick fix because I'm going to be changing to the R1 front end come winter so all these mounts will change.

Let's just say the Chinese round headlights that you see everywhere (and the one I purchased) and really garbage, avoid avoid avoid, unless you want a potential fire on your bike.

Picked up some straighter and lower bars and put them on today. Also replaced one fork seal, no more leaks now!
