Like I needed another project

Not sure if there is any interest in these ole bikes around here or not. But I figured I'd start a thread and see. I have no real plan or any direction really so who knows where this will head. Im in no rush as other projects come first so this could take a while.

Couple months ago my sister told me my little brother was selling his bike. I'd been following his build on IG and kinda liked the direction he was headed. He just lost interest and was onto something else I was told. Well after talking with him some over the next few months, we agreed on a price, and a road trip was in order. Got up there and the bike was a good bit different than I had expected, but still we made a deal. So I strapped her to the back of the Crown Vic and headed home. Yeah, its a Harley and yes its bloody heavy. Always liked them but never had a hard desire to buy one, until now.

Now I got the bike home and started piecing the pieces back together. Original plan was to finish putting her back together and ride it like my brother built it. But that has changed. I did manage to get it almost together

Eventually the OCD won and now I'm staring at bits and pieces. Luckily these bikes lend to all sorts of modifications so something cool may come outa this one day

That ain't no harley, that's a sportster....

Did you buy that so your old lady got something to ride....

:D :fu:

Do you know what year that motor is? Know of anything done to it? The collapsible push rod tubes would indicate adjustable push rods, not sure if any year evo sporty had those...

Nope, she's all mine :fu: :)

What I'm told is-
88 883 originally
1200 jugs
Wiseco pistons
86 cyl heads ( supposed higher compression )
Barnett clutch
And something about a jap stator I think ( memory not what it used to be)

That's about all I know.

points for hardtail, bonus points if you don't add seat springs. That is my next build (true hard tail) ya know after my other 19 are done.

Seems I never updated this after blowing the bike apart and stripping the frame to bare metal. So yeah, I did that. Otherwise she's been sitting on my table like so for the past 2 months while I stare at her.

Image

I've decided to chop the hardtailed section off and re-do it. Not really happy with how it was done so I might as well fix it now. Already have the right size tube sitting on the shop floor from some project that I can't remember and the proper dies. I'll reuse the axle plates and this shouldn't cost much of anything really other that argon and electricity. Win Win

After looking around the shop I realized I already had most everything needed to make a simple crude fixture. Made one many moons ago for a trike project so its just a matter of remembering the bits. Here's the rear axle plate fixture I threw together a couple days ago. Just need to make up something for the neck now. Already have some neck cones and threaded rod

Image

Friday I made a go at this fixture for the neck.

Image

My neck cones and threaded rod were 3/4"-16 already and I don't have that tap at home or work. So I tried to be smart and cheap and quick by turning the threaded rod down for a press fit into this block I whipped up. That didn't work so well though and I wound up ejecting the pieces outa the press, bending the rod. As luck would have it, nobody near by stocked that exact pitch rod either

Today I attacked it a little different and a bit more though out. Taped the block for 3/4"-10 and presto, I'm where I should have been Friday. I just need to bore the threads out of the cones now so they will slide over the threads

Bit more done this evening.

Got the fixture tacked to the table now all plumb and straight. Frames on and everything is set where I want it. Need to make something removable to center the middle of the frame now. Trying to keep all parts relatively simple as I have a tendency to over complicate and over build things

So here's one of the big reasons I wanted to rework this hardtail. This plate, which I assume was to be a gusset, was the only piece holding the lower tubes to the main frame. Granted there was one on each side but that little 1" weld was all there was

Image

So this am I got up and this was the end result. No turning back now

Image

Got some string run now and working on sorting some lines and angles. Trying to get the upper tubes as close to the backbone angle as possible. The axle plates I have now are not going to work so I'll just design some new ones this week. On the hunt for a rear caliper also. Currently eyeballing a fixed style off an 04 gsxr, but still not 100% sure

Got the axle plates drawn up Monday. Kidos said they look like a fish  Hoped to get them done before this long weekend but that didn't work so well. Need to mill out the slot to proper diameter still and drill/tap the fender strut holes. Going to use these tube caps to end the tubes.

Image

Spent a good bit of time this week grinding and smoothing previous welds and grindmarks, removed a couple unneeded tabs also. Frames far from perfect still, but it looks quite a bit nicer than it did. Got an gsxr1000 rear caliper on the way as of this morning. Not sure if it will work or not till I have it in hand but it will like kinda cool stashed between the frame rails if it does.

Gotta go reorganize the shop a bit so I can get to the tube bender and I might try and bend a bit of tube this weekend.

#27 ·
Spent a couple hours last night shifting things around the shop making room to use the bender. My boys been asking how the bender works, so I figured I'd let him have a go at bending a piece himself. I needed a 90° for layout so perfect chance

Image

Little guy actually liked it and asked to bend the tubes for the bike. So today I sat down and layed them out.

Image

Then let him go. Turned out real good. I'll get to capping and coping them someone this week

I think I may run a spring seat, going to need some kinda bounce to cushion these roads. Haven't decided 100% yet because I'd like the option of having a passenger. Maybe a thick snap on pillon pad. But the thought of a solid seat makes my back hurt.

Current thoughts are to run 16's front and rear with matching tires or close to it ( 150's probably or 130/150 combo ). No skinny large diameter front crap. Want to keep the bike as skinny as possible and as low. Tank at the same angle and drag bars.

Deffinately going to build a springer front end in the future. But thats after my other bike frame is done.

Bits and pieces done here and there throughout the week. Top tubes are capped, smoothed, and coped

Image

And tacked in place

Image

Then I started in on the lower tubes. Thought I was going to be slick and reuse some of the metal from the old hardtail. Now looking back, that may not have been the case. After cleaning off the old welds and smoothing everything best I could, I realized the tubes were not a matching pair of bends. There was 10 degrees difference between them. Not too noticeable now with only an inch of tube but add some length and that 10 deg would have been bad

Image

More time and a couple failed attempts later, we finally got them matching. Oh and the caliper came in

Image

Made a couple tube slugs and another motor mount. Got a motor mount that was attacked with a unibit that needs fixing so I might as well do that while I got a bare frame

Image

Slugs welded in and another bent tube for filler pieces. Time to connect the dots

Thought I was going to get a lot done today since all I really had to do was mow the grass and cook a meal or 2. Turns out that I wouldn't get much done at all. Woke up this am with an idea and couldn't get past it. So I played around a bit.

Image

Image

Need to clean up the motor, throw it in the frame and see how things look then. In order to do that I need to finish some tube work. So back to it I suppose
